    Default Operation 5k

Having initially started a thread in the sit and go forum to complete this operation from just $50, I have now become rather bored of purely playing turbos, and moved back to my first poker love, 7 stud.

I'm using this thread mainly to document my own journey up to 5k, and maybe beyond. It may be beneficial for stud players, for general bankroll management (I'm on the conservative side), but hopefully for me too, as I'll be able to track my progress and get some advice from time to time.

So. this is the start, I'll try to update regularly.

Current bankroll - $1245, up from $50 from sit and gos.

My bankroll strategy for stud, due to the high variance of the game, is 400BB for each level. This should give me a nice cushion for moving up of 100BB above the generally advised 300BB per level.

    So, although I have the 300BB for 2/4, I'm staying at 1/2 limit until I have $1600.

I'll update later on my progress on day 1 of tracking this all.

    BR: $ 1245

    Okay
Couldn't update last night but will do now.

Cheers for the reply's btw, stud is quite rare on here so thought it would be good to post about it frequently.

    First days play:

Played a solid 4 hours at 1/2, and despite being up considerably at the start of the session, I managed to end up only $20 after 4 hours. Looked over hand histories and found that I was playing well with only a couple of minor mistakes and the game was very juicy. Sadly just outdrawn a lot by fish. Oh well, Still profit!

No hand histories currently as I'm playing at Pacific. Anyone know a hand converter?

    Anyway
    That was yesterday

    WOW: Didn't expect this one.

Tonight the 1/2 tables were a little slow and not filling so I sat at a couple of stud tables waiting for players and sat in a normal limit holdem table to see how I faired (haven't ever dedicated much time to limit before).

Anyway, I play about 5 rounds of the table when I pick up two jacks, 3-bet pre-flop.

    Flop comes down jjk.

That will certainly do me, cap the betting.
    Next card, 5, capped.

    Next card, another k.

I begin to worry as the guy flips his pocket kings over but then remember that Pacific have bad beat jackpots and I just qualified.
Jaw hits floor as announcement pops up on table and othe rplayers congratulate me.

Played 0 hands of stud, been sitting down for about 30 mins, and BOOM

    Instant $500 bonus for me.

That felt good, and especially at my first limit game and first ever quad over quad experience.

So, as I begin to play stud now my table fills, I can post saying.

BR: $1711 woo for bad beats

Should certainly make this operation more interesting.
I'll continue at 1/2 despite now being rolled for 2/4 as I haven't really played enough hands to prove myself a winner at that level yet.

    Woo for me.

    Wow.

    Great stuff.

I think this thread sounds interesting, be particularly interested to see how you get on with the 7cs.

I look forward to frequent updates.

    Good luck.

    Thankyou very much
I'll be updating rather frequently as I'm a student and therefore have way too much free time.

Just need a hand converter, don't really want to post raw hands.

Update: After not quite believing my good fortune with the bad beat jackpot, I stayed at the limit HE table to try and learn the game some more, and ended up hitting another one, this time getting crushed by a straight flush. Probably the best news I've ever had playing poker came through in an email.

Appears that they just reloaded the bonus amount because it went below the minimum required, so added to my $1700 br, another $1300 or so dollars.

So now my BR is at $3026

I don't quite feel that another bad beat jackpot is going to come along soon so I've returned to my better game, stud, while mixing in a few of the medium level MTT's on Pacific with guaranteed $25000 payouts for example.

Briliant luck for me at the moment.

Anyway, depsite all that goodness, I'm now at a loss as to what to do in terms on stakes to play at.

If I follow my 400BB rule, I'm technically comfortable at 3/6, where I have 500BB at the moment.

Would it be worth playing here, where the games are normally quite good on Pacific, or 2/4, or maybe even sticking at 1/2.
I'm experienced all the way up to 5/10 from previous play, before I cashed out my bankroll a while ago.

    Any thoughts?

I would say give it go, especially as you have played at that level and higher previously. If it doesn't work out and you lose horribly then just move down.

By the way, that some amazing luck to get 2 badbeat jackpots so close together. Congrats and I hope your luck continues.

    Cheers
I realised that, must have been my week or something.

Will probably go for 3/6 for a session and drop to 2/4 if it goes badly (obviously I'll stay if I'm just getting unlucky with beats etc). 1/2 I don't think will seem worth it and I'm likely to play badly.

Also, decided to give a couple of MTT's a go as mentioned in my previous post.

    Played two $20's at Pacific.

First one I lost through horrible play in the early stages when I raised with nines in mid position, and was reraised by the button. I almost insta-called and was rather mad at myself for calling when he flipped over jacks. No improvement and I'm out. Really need to learn to fold medium pairs.

Anyway, I quite liked the structure, despite it resembling a turbo somewhat.

Blinds increased every 10 mins, never an ante.
    Starting stack of only 800.
80 players or so in both that I played, top 10 paid, with a fair but still top heavy payout.

Loaded up the second with 79 players. Played quite solidly throughout making only minor mistakes luckily. Made the final table where the payouts began very shortstacked.

Hit aq offsuit first hand. Doubled up against jacks.
Played my regular turbo style game and cruised into the top four taking my chances nicely.

Top four were myself as chip leader with - 22k, second with - 19k, and 3rd and 4th with - 7.5k.

The two shortstacks were knocked out quickly by the other guy leaving us in heads up and him with roughly a 2:1 chip lead. I clawed it back to level and then up to about 45k (the guy folded to any raise). However, I caught aq suited and immediately raised hoping to finish it. He reraised putting himself all-in and flipped kings. They held up and I walked away with second place and $316.

Will certainly be playing more MTT's on Pacific. They seem very soft near the bubble with players folding themselves out.

Finally had chance to actually play some stud.

Sat down in a 6-handed 3/6 game, and proceeded to play my regular conservative game.

The other five players were involved in every pot but they all seemed to be very much calling stations as opposed to heavy raisers with poor cards. So a very good juicy table in my opinion.

After what seemed like an eternity I caught aa10 on third.
Second to act and raised. Three callers unsurprisingly.

Hit an ace on fourth. Nice. Others now have these boards.

    1: 98 suited
    2: 7j
    3: 55
    Me: aa10a

I'm praying that the guy with fives has hit a set at this point. He bets out, I raise, player 1 reraises. 2 drops out, 3 caps and we both call.

Three players to fifth. Looks likely I'm up against a set and a straight/flush draw.

    On 5th

    1: 983 suited
    2: 55q
Me: aa10a10 (woo was my train of thought here).

Up against calling stations who both must have hit big hands. Capped again. Big pot certainly developing.

    6th deals everyone a blank.

    1: 983 suited 4
    2:55q2
    Me: aa10a106.

I raise. Players 1 and 2 just call. Anyway I can get more here? I was thinking check raise would look nice but decided that against these pair it would likely be capped again.

    7th I get a 2.

I check here hoping to get a double bet in. Player 1 fchecks behind (missed flsuh draw?), Player 2 bets out. I raise. Player 1 folds and 2 just calls with his set of fives. Can I get more here leading out? Or do I really need 2 to hit his full for extra bets to come?

Anyway, very good session with most (75%) of my big hands holding up. Many in big pots like above. An amazing return to 3/6. Hopefully I can stay there for a long time to come. Maybe even 5/10. Who knows.

holy hell 2k+ in 3 days?

    Damn son nice bad beats....

Thankyou very much. Always nice to see a bad beat pay off, and especially two in a row.

Problem now is I feel unbeatable. Will just take one or two bad losing sessions to get right back down to earth. I was hoping to slowly build up through the limits too, and add in the occassional tourney placing. Looks like I've hurdled a couple of limits and fluked a nice MTT placing too.

Hopefully things will now even out a bit.

Wow the odds of hitting one, let alone TWO, bad beat jackpots are slim. Congrats man and hope to see you hit 5k! Looks like you;ll cruise there!
