Operation: How do you play this game again?

I have played very little poker for the past two months or so.

I struggle to find more than 7-10 hours a week for poker at the best of times. I've had even less recently for a lot of reasons, but the main one is my entirely unhealthy obsession with "football". For those of you who know nothing about Australian football, my team has just done pretty much what the Patriots did earlier this year - they had statistically the most dominant regular season in 80 years, went unbeaten through the play-offs, and then three weeks ago they fell at the final hurdle in our equivalent of the SuperBowl. It was just their 3rd loss in 45 games! So now that they've built my hopes up and then completely dashed them, again, its time to say fuck them, move on and get back into poker again. What better way to do that than with a clean start and a new operation?

I play mainly 6-max with the occasional bit of FR thrown in. I started in Feb '08 by depositing $50 on Stars, and have since ground that up to around $270 playing 2NL, 5NL and 10NL. I am currently 2/3-tabling 10NL, still exclusively on Stars. I play 22/18/4 or so at 6-max, with a lifetime winrate of 5.4 ptBB/100 over about 38K hands. Sounds OK I think, but to be honest it is inflated by a ridiculously hot upswing at the beginning (that has probably played a big part in me being still hooked now!). Take out my first 3,000 hands and my winrate since is a much more sobering 2.2 ptBB/100, over 35K hands.

I am a keen student of the game, having read HOH1, TOP, NLHETAP, and most of the strategy articles here and on some other sites. I still have a load of leaks, but I think one of the biggest ones is hand reading - I don't do it often enough and as a result I am not that good at it. Thats one of the main reasons I'm only playing 2-3 tables, so I can concentrate on developing reads. My general discipline also needs improving - in particular, due to the other calls on my time I tend to play at the end of a long day, when I am tired, and way too often catch myself making silly decisions - especially really bad calls on later streets - because I am too weary to think about it properly. So I need to do something about that.

My goal over the next three months is to improve my play in those areas, and to win some money and take down a few bonuses along the way (as a non-US player I have a lot of options open to me so why not use them?). More specifically, I'm aiming to play another 25K hands by Christmas, at a winrate of at least 4ptBB/100, which when combined with a couple of bonuses should hopefully be enough to get me to a BR of $600+ and 25NL.

The purpose of this operation is to force me to self-evaluate by posting tough hands, asking advice and commenting on my own progress.

Any and all comments, questions, requests for advice or flames most welcome ...

Well, so far so good.

After more than 6 months and almost 40K hands solely on Stars, I moved to Party on Friday, and am up about 5 buy-ins over ~2K hands. Is it just me or are there a whole lot more fish on Party? Anyway, my roll is now up to $355, and in another couple thousand hands I'll clear my bonus for a very nice extra boost. Awesome!

No hands to post right now, but I'll do a decent review in a day or two and maybe post a couple then.

My other news of note is that tonight I played a live tournament and, as usual, crashed out. Man, I suck at live tournaments. I'm pretty suspect on tournament play generally, especially when the blinds start to get big, and I don't know why but in live play I seem to abandon some of the core tenets of my game. Especially my aggression. Maybe its the fact that I've got to hand over real chips, or maybe that everyone else in these tourneys is so loose passive that I get sucked into that as well. Damn discipline!!

Anyway, my immediate goal is to clear the Party bonus in the next week or two, and then move on to the next one ... this bonus whoring gig rocks!

I quite like the software on Party - its got a lot of features that Stars doesn't, like buttons for betting relative to BB or pot size, and reading notes by just rolling over the icon. It took me a couple of hours to get used to it, but its definitely growing on me the more I play there.

I have had some trouble with lagging - the worst was when I was on two waitlists that came up at once, the whole thing hung for about 30 seconds, and I was timed out with AA on one of my tables! Other than that though, not too bad.

Well, I've cleared my bonus on Party now, and started a new one today on Poker770 (an iPoker skin).

I seem to have been running ridiculously hot since I left Stars (the very average players on Party and 770 help as well). My winrate over the past two weeks at Party and 770 is more than 11 ptBB/100, and my BR is now up to $580! I'm still a touch short of my BR goal for 25NL, but 770 have 20NL tables that I'm definitely rolled for, so I've moved up to them. Woohoo!

My goal now is to clear my bonus at 770 over the next couple of weeks.

BR now up to about $680, playing 2oNL FR. The original goal is obviously done and I need a new one, so I'm aiming now for BR of $1250 and stepping up to 50NL. I'll update the sig shortly.

Man, these guys at 20NL are so tight! I try to cherry pick tables with high average pots and high players/flop, but I seem to find myself surrounded by multi-tabling 9/6 nits all the time. I'm already aggro, but against these guys I'm something like 28/23/6 over my last 5K ...

Had a mega-variance weekend. I had 3 sessions of about 500 hands each - down 3 buy-ins in the first one, up 4 buy-ins in the second, and then down another 2.5 in the third. Overall down 1.5 or about $30. Looking through my biggest losing hands I was getting the chips in good more often than not, but I just had more than my share of negative variance. That tells me I wasn't being a complete spewtard the whole time (and considering how well I've been running lately I can't really complain too much) and I don't need to panic about getting stacked a couple of times.

Don't get me wrong though, there was also some pretty bad play in there too! A good example was the biggest pot I've ever played - $90 on a 20NL table. I'm sitting in MP with a $45 stack and raise it up to 4xBB with QQ, got 3bet by a nit also with a $45 stack in the CO, I 4bet, he shoves, I call. If the 3bet wasn't a strong indicator of AA/KK, then the shove certainly was, but I'd been stomping all over this table and in my excitement saw no reason to slow down here. Sure enough he flips AA. Dumb.

I could probably slow down a little, because I don't think my post-flop skills are strong enough to maintain a decent long term winrate playing FR at 28/23, but at the same time its working against these nits at the moment and by doing it I'm probably developing my skills more quickly! I think my focus for now should be on controlling my reverse tilt tendencies and picking my spots better both pre and post flop. Slightly more controlled aggression. Consider how likely the blinds are to play back before stealing from CO/BU. Treat 3bets with respect. Fewer hero calls when I know I am most likely beat. Stop and think a bit before clicking the raise button. That will require more discipline around putting people on ranges and acting accordingly, which was and still is a huge leak for me.

And I am going to post some hands soon - I have already identified some that I could use some feedback on, but I'm not on my home PC right now and I just need to get around to posting them ...

This is on the iPoker skin, correct? I experienced the same nitfestery when i played on there back at the start of this year. So much so that as soon as I cleared the bonus i went elsewhere. At 20NL it's reeeeedic to see so many 10/8, 15- tabling regulars.

Preflop I thought I was getting good set odds and also some overpair value. Villain obviously only raises premium hands pre, especially UTG, but I was thinking his range was probably high pocket pairs (77+), AK, AQ, AJ.

I read the flop bet as a cbet with an overpair or air, but the turn bet suggested he had the overpair, and probably a better one than mine. Not sure whether to raise to try and take it down, or fold?

Villain here is 17/4/1 over 45 hands. I have two questions here - first is whether I should have folded preflop? AJo is not a super strong hand OOP against a tight raiser. Having called, second is what to do against the raise? The only hands I'm worried about are AA, AK, AQ and any 4, which I think is probably a minority of his range, but given he's not aggressive post-flop but still raised my donk bet suggests to me he's got the goods. Thoughts?

Tbh I can´t give any advice on best turn play, Im almost indifferent between all three options and would act based on reads and timing. Vs a total unknown Id say c/f > b/f > c/c

hand three: AJo vs a tight raiser OOP is guaranteed to get you in trouble and now you know why. You have to fold the flop.

OK, quick whine just to get it out of my system - I'm now officially on my biggest downswing ever. I've dropped $260 or pretty much right on 13 buy-ins in the last 2,500 hands or so. Thats about a third of my total roll gone in three days. Over that stretch AA, KK, QQ, AK and AQ are all losing starting hands for me. Fuck the world and everyone in it. End whine.

Right, now back to business. I just cleared my Mansion bonus, which is the third bonus since I started my whoring run a few weeks ago. The next one is PokerRoom - I'm a bit sick of iPoker (and its been bitch-slapping me around lately) so I thought I'd give OnGame a shot.

Up to now I've been using the bonuses and kickbacks solely to build my roll, but I've decided to vary my approach for the next one and use it to get a 6-month StoxPoker membership. I've heard good things about them and figure now that I'm at 20/25NL and hopefully moving up to 50NL in the not-too-distant future, I need to make sure that my game is up to it. So time to invest a bit more.

Villain is 57/23/1.6, so I'm putting him on a fairly wide range preflop, but nothing super-premium. He calls psb's on the flop and turn, and then the flush card comes in on the river. Again, looks like a donk calling with a flush draw and no odds to do so. Could also be AJ, but for this guy I reckon it could also be AK, AQ, in fact just about any A. Maybe even a few Js, especially J7.


I remember reading once that the chances of a villain having two suited cards pre-flop, and that suit being the same as the dominant suit on the board, are pretty low. Most three-flush boards aint going to hit anyone, but are still awesome for bluffs at these stakes, and I kind of assume that I'm not the only one who thinks this. I therefore don't tend to get scared off by them too often.

Well, BR is up to $765 now. I continue to take a reaming on iPoker, but I've partly offset it with a solid run on OnGame. Add in cleared bonuses and I'm roughly even for the last three weeks or so.

Its been almost a month since I've updated this, and part of the reason is that I've just returned from an internet-less 2 week vacation! I did some reading and watched a few videos I downloaded before I left, but otherwise no poker. So now I'm refreshed and ready to rock!

I have come back with a sort of "sub-goal" for my operation - to prove I can beat 20NL 6-max on iPoker. I have about 13K hands there to date and I'm in a $250 hole, having run at almost -5ptBB/100. I'm not totally sure of the reasons yet. I have a solid winning record at 2NL, 5NL and 10NL, and at 20/25NL at other sites including Stars, OnGame and Cryptologic. My stats are pretty much the same on all networks, so I don't think I'm playing that much differently. It could be some negative variance, but I wonder whether I have also struggled to adjust to the mass of shorties, nits and TAGs that infest iPoker. There is definitely also a fair chunk of spew in there due to frustration and playing when tired, that I need to get out of my game.

So my goal is to dig myself out of the hole and become a winning player at iPoker 20NL before moving on. Getting back to even, plus bonuses and RB, should get my BR to around the $1250 mark and allow me to move up to 50NL. And if I can do it in 15-20K hands, then I will have that many hands at around 4ptBB/100, which seems a reasonable winrate - at least enough to prove to me that I can beat this level.

If it takes longer than 20K hands then my plan is to keep working on my game and playing until I get there, and then to move up to 50NL once I have at least 10K hands at 3ptBB/100 under my belt.

I will try to post some hands and stats as I go along to see if anyone has any thoughts on what is happening and why, but for now I have dropped to two tables and am concentrating on playing thinking, positionally aware poker (to the extent I'm capable of it ... lol!) and bringing my A-game every time.

Well after a fairly rocky start to my "sub-operation", I have finally made some progress.

I dropped another couple of buy-ins from my starting point over the first week, then I had a +4 buy-in session yesterday and another positive session today. That puts me at -$200, which is up $50 from the start and 20% of the way towards getting back to even.

I've been spending a lot of time off the tables watching videos and reading, and I think thats finally helping me to get better at dealing with the shorties, aggro nits, and constant three-bettors. I recognized a massive leak on one recent video, which the coach called "floating yourself" - basically I was raising preflop with a decent hand in HJ or EP, cbetting a whiffed flop out of position, and then check-folding when I still didn't improve on the turn. So instead of doing that nearly every time I've been throwing a few different lines out, have taken down some pots and seem to have at least stemmed the torrent of cash flowing to my opponents in that spot.

Anyway, two decent sessions is a long way from a winning player, so I'm not getting carried away yet. Got to stick at it!

Update: progress a little on the slow side right now. Managed to get as far as -$175, but have dropped back to -$195. So in about 7K hands in the last couple of weeks I have won back about $55.

Well up on my starting point, but plenty left to do.

I don't like my flop and turn play at all here. His bets are so small I was thinking he's most likely betting to protect his hand, which probably means a weak top pair or a draw, both of which probably came in on the turn. In retrospect I think I should have raised the flop to find out where I was, and as played probably fold the turn.

But I didn't do that - instead I called down to the river, and hit my own flush. The only hands that beat me here are the unlikely 4s 3s, and the rather more likely anything that involves Qs. Given his small bet again on the river I thought he was a good chance to have missed the flush altogether and be protecting top pair, or maybe to have a weaker flush than mine. I think the 3bet means its a flush - could it be one that I beat?

Had a +1 buy-in session today, which is unremarkable except that it is another small step in the right direction. I'm now at -$168, which puts me about a third of the way back to $0 at 20NL on iPoker.

The other reason to be happy about my small win tonight though is that ...

... it has pushed my BR over $1,000 for the first time! Woooohoooo!

I've made more in bonuses that I have in actual table winnings, but I am a winning player over 70K hands (except at 20NL on iPoker ...) and I think I'm getting better all the time. I guess it shows that even a donk like me can make a little pocket money out of this game!

Ran hot tonight - won almost 2 buy-ins over 300 hands at about 30ptBB/100. I had 4 boats, 3 straights and a few trips and two pair hands. On the downside, I was on some pretty weak-tight tables and struggled to get value from a few my big hands.

BR is now $1,039, and my iPoker NL20 balance is back to -$135 which means I am 46% of the way to zero!

Picked up another 2.5 buy-ins tonight, in an hour or so.

My whole profit came from two hands. In the first one I 3bet from the button pre-flop with KK, BB 4bet shoved 100BB, original raiser folded and I of course called for the rest of my 100BB stack. He turned over JJ, and my boys held up.

Ten minutes later on the same table, I called the CO's raise from the button with 33, and the flop came 993. Luckily the CO had a 9, by the river we both had our whole 200BB stacks in, and next thing I know I have 400BB in front of me.

So now I'm back to just -$85 in my quest to get back to even at 20NL on iPoker, and my BR is up to $1,089!

Almost 2 more buy-ins tonight over 300 hands. Took down two massive pots on one table, with KK both times, which left me sitting with a 500BB stack.

On the flop I was concerned about the vulnerability of my overpair, so I was trying to fold him out by repping AA/KK. Maybe a bit spewy? I thought he was much less of a station post-flop than pre-flop, and I had also decided that I was committed to betting any low dry flop when I 4bet pre.

With his flop raise I have about $9 behind which I'm getting 3:1 on. I strongly suspect I'm behind, but is there any way I can get away from it?

Didn't run so good today. Nothing huge, just a lot of meh. 99 lost to TT, QQ lost to KK, two pair got counterfeited when the board paired on the river, JJ beaten by a set on a 873r flop in a 3bet pot. Down a bit less than a buy-in over a couple of hundred hands.

Had a very frustrating session this morning - had a 90/80 on my immediate right for about 10 orbits and could not stack him. He was surprisingly unterrible (or lucky) post-flop - he seemed to get away from me every time I had something, and bet pot every time I didn't. Either that or I was just bad at getting his money in. Bugger.
