Operation: Let's learn 6-max NL

Default Operation: Let's learn 6-max NL

Well, had pulled out most of my roll from fulltilt and had about $250 left from the $300 I left there and had been playing mostly 1/2 LHE at Stars for the moment but decided I was rolled for $10NL so why not try to learn 6-max and at the same time keep my limit and nl play on different sites (especially since I get rakeback at fulltilt)

Have only been playing a few days so far, up 6 buy-ins yesterday, down 2 today though mostly coolers I think...but will put the biggest losing hands up for comment

    Hand 1
#1 Villain here was 31/13 over 61 hands (If I understand these stats. Villian is a high PF raiser )

UTG raises $0.20, 2 folds, Hero raises $0.75, 2 folds, UTG raises $2.20, Hero calls $1.65

    UTG's re-raise , does it not suggest KK+ ?.

Maybe my opinions are results orientaed.

But post flop, I would be all in.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hand 2 (I am not peeking at results this time)

once again , UTG is strong, I reckon AA/KK

Yes, hand #1 was pure spew really. The min-raise, big 4-bet really is usually AA/KK 98% of the time and I should have folded pre but after I call and get as good a flop as AK can hit realy I think I have to go with it.....if I could have it over though I'd go with my rad and fold to the rr.

Hand #2 I think can a lot of times be AK in this spot and I think I'm happy getting it in on a board of unders as the only way he can really call me is with an overpair or the nfd when I shove.

Hand #3 when he checked to me on the flop and then just called the bet I'm not worried about him holding AA as I'm almost certain I'd get c/r there. Once the A hit on the turn I'm happy to get it AI as I'm certain I'm ahead since AT would also likely c/r me on the flop

Hand #4 was possibly spewy given it was a shortstacker running 34/8 and again with a min-raise, bit r/r line so I should have given it up but I think at these stakes it could be the wrong decision to fold a medium pp against a short-staker....again, I'd be interested in more experienced players feedback on this.

Unless you have been 3betting like a monkey, i'd muck hand 2 PF. There's no point putting in 25% of your stack PF just to set mine or get stacked on a low flop, because his range here is TT+,AK, probably even tighter than that (i'd expect him to shove AK more than min 4bet it, but that's obv villain specific). Same goes for hand 1.

Hand 3 I like, his range here is mostly AX and he's not folding any of em so u may as well shove turn. Gaycakes river card.

4 i wouldn't be 3-betting PF, but as played I'd muck to the shove. He isn't that short, and given his stats he's not getting it AI PF with a wide enough range to make the call profitable. Stove 88 against a range of 99+,AQ+ and see how you're doing.

As an aside, the stakes should never dictate your decision to call or fold. 10NL has it's share of nits and nutters just like all the rest. The only thing that should influence your decision is how your hand is doing against a villains range and what odds you are getting.
There's only one system. Bet. Lose. Borrow. Steal. Lose. Take the drugs. Lose. Prison. Death.

You are correct here, and I need to change my thinking in that regard and think I have been getting better at it, but am still on a 10 BI downswing since first post and all been to coolers imho but not sure what the issue is.

Just seems I get no action at all unless I am beat...almost everyone is passive and I can run the same lines with QTo as I do with AA in the same position yet AA will get folded round after I raise while QT will get callers. It's just very strange and not sure how to adjust since I'm not doing anything different with my hands. In fact, just looking over my hands for the last week I have more winning hands than losing, but nearly all my winning hands are the blinds only.

Going to be a few hands here, the 6 most losing hands in the past week.

#1 Villain is 50/34.6/4.33. My play here was based on the fact I figured with those stats he's have reraised me with AA preflop or shown some aggression at all during the hand.

    Quick reply:
    #1, #2: Fine
#3: Bad. You should fold here. What do you think villain is pushing here?
#4: Also bad. vs this type of player I even fold QJo on the button!
#5: You have a weak TP. I might call flop and fold turn to aggression.
#6: Your bet sizing is very good. Therefore, on the turn I would fold to min raise.
  7. #7
And now for something different....a winning session

#1 Villain is 10/6/8 with 0% 3-bet but only over 49 hands. For some reason I put him on AA as soon as he reraised so I decided to take a flop and evaluate. I think pushing the flop over his raise is the better line but don't think we were getting away from all-in at any stage after the flop.

#2 Villain is 33/9/1. Wasn't really sure what to put him on here but after his donk to a card that likely didn't help him (I couldn't see him calling a reraise on that flop with 44) I put him on the flush draw or a slowplayed Ax and pushed over his turn bet hoping he wasn't on QTcc or Ax expecting him to fold most anything else

#3 Villain is 15.4/7/2.3. In this hand, the guy to my left was playing like 75/63 and showing down crap so I thougth villain might have been coming along with something like Ax that he wanted to see a flop with but not reraise with the dead money in the pot. With his 3-bet on the flop I started to think it was AA slowplayed to try and keep the maniac in the hand and with the drawy board I decided to push after his 3-bet to hopefully get him off or get the money in while I was ahead. I'm not sure how else I could have played this hand, but I have a feeling I played it badly

One think I am still having trouble with I am noticing is 3-betting and 4-betting AK and to a lesser extent AQ. Most other hands I find I can play preflop based on stats and position of the opponents but if we take hand #1 here as an example, I'm sure the general consensus would be to have 3-bet pre as my read based on his stats would have been very polarised based on lack of hands seen so far but I'm finding myself having difficulty being willing to get it in pre on a coinflip......that could be my downswing talking though.
  8. #8
U mean 4bet pre in hand 1? I wouldn't against a seemingly nittastic unknown. Small sample but it's unlikely he'll turn out to be a squeezehappy 26/24 type. 200bbs deep as well, trying to stackoff here PF would be a hudge error. Regarding the hand itself, i'd shove the flop after the c/r.

As for the other hands I don't wanna comment too much (don't post results!!!11!!!), but I will say that a 15/7 villain is prob never calling a 3bet w AX, this is like 44-TT >95% of the time.

Mainly talking about 3 and 4-betting AK/AQ and TT-QQ hands in general, just still not comfortable getting it all in with them pre at this stage even when I am likely ahead of a villain range.

Hand 1 I can see the point to shoving over the c/r here rather than waiting for the turn since if we don't hit the flush on the turn we're at 9 outs 1 time rather than the 9 outs twice we get from the flop and we effectively turn our hand face-up with the call while if we shove then having a set enters our range and we have extra fold-equity against a non-set while still having draws to the nuts if he calls.

With hand 3, if we're putting villain on 44-TT 95% of the time then what percentage of the time are we ahead of them and what percentage are we behind to a set and does the difference make pushing in this situation +EV?

I need to get better at thinking back over the hand and recognizing standard lines, makes this hand so much easier to play....what likely hand is villain calling a pfr with and then min-raising my raise on that flop with? Simple answer is pp that has hit a set rather than AA. I think I could find a fold there to my raise and was actually considering it but decided against it for some reason, think it might have been some reverse tilt tbh.

    hand 1 I thought lol fold pf because he's only 4betting aces/kings
hand 2 the guy is a little bit more aggressive, but I'm not 3bing this ever because only better calls so we turn our hand into a bluff
  11. #11
Yeah, I tanked almost my full bank on that decision but how much does the fact KK is in his 4-bet range change the decision to call is my A has 50% chance vs his range of being good?

Admitedly, the min-raise then 4-bet should have had me laying it down.

I could also ask if we can really lay down top 2 on that board even to the c/r but I think it's really an easy fold in hindsight. If I put him on AA I'm drawing to runner runner, if he's on KK I'm drawing to 2 A's or runner runner for a split pot and if I put him on the straight I'm drawing to 4 outs or runner runner for a split....there is no way that can be +EV

My 6-Max br is back up to $240 and am down $13 this month but have made about $40 in rakeback so has been ok and have managed to get back up from the 6BI downswing a few days ago so hopefully we keep going at this rate.

For my NL game, while I stay at fulltilt I'm going to use the moving up strategy that Ipoq has quoted in his operation so I still have $500 to make before I move back up to $25NL.....thank god I have LHE to keep me sane at times

Your second para here kinda answers your question in the first A nit taking that flop line skews his range to basically just sets so shoving is never EV (except for when you are going to spike a K on the river).

This was the point I was hoping to get to so thank you

If we assume at this level that a cold-call of a pfr followed by a min-raise during the hand is always a pp that has hit a set then at what point do we become easily exploitable?

Do we just call the min-raise and then try to get to showdown cheaply after that and not put any more money in the pot if opp leads into us? Do we just fold to the min-raise?

I just can't see how we can't start to be exploited by other thinking players at the table if we start giving up to cold-call/min-raise line too often so how do we balance it out to not get stacked when opponent is telling us we're beat by using a standard line with getting the money in when they do the same and we're ahead?

Interesting session tonight, went the typical way of going down 2BI before getting sorted and coming back to end up a BI up. There were a few interesting hands I'll post in a minute.

One thing I noticed was I was starting to get tilted from the amount of folding there was to my pfr's and how tight the tables all were. I'd raise pretty much the same amount every time no matter my position or cards and 50% of the time it was folded around, the other 50% were taken down on a c-bet.

136 hands out of 903 total I was the pre-flop raiser, 67 hands saw a flop and 69 hands didn't....just doesn't seem right for 6-max.

Over all I'm not finding it too hard to play and am learning to make lay-downs I never would have back in the old days....I just need to learn how to not drop a BI or 2 at the start of the night and have to work my way out of the hole.

Will be interested to see if anyone has anything to say about the hands I layed down up there....I don't feel too bad about them but the KK one could have been a small mistake.

Anyway, up another $11 tonight and made $34 in rakeback last month which took my br to $250 at the start of the night, along with earning ~$4.40 tonight so br for 6-Max NL is at $265.50
  16. #16
Not much happening over the last few days as I've been sick.

Played a couple of small sessions and am up another 3BI's but no really interesting hands to add. Have also been playing a few Matrix games just for the hell of it, am about +/- $1 on them over all.

BR at FT is now sitting at ~$290 but will hopefully start taking off a little bit faster as I'm going to try and make myself play at least 1k hand a day for the rest of the month as I think if I can do that at 5ptBB/100 and with rakeback I should be rolled for 25NL at the end of the month.
  17. #17
Well that was a swingy session....only 440 hands so far but had to take a break for a bit I think. Went down 3BI over first 320 hands before finishing the session up about $7 and thought I should stop after getting unstuck and see what caused getting stuck before continuing.

Over all just seems like coolers were the main cause.

#1 Villain is 17.3/12.9/5 and we'd tangled a bit before hand in BvB and I had needled him about tanking for every decision so I tanked right to the end of time before the shove

Had a crappy day yesterday at limit that I allowed to tilt me (folks wanting to talk on msn as I was playing and got tilted from stars taking focus each time a table popped and I had to retype shit over and over, went from +13BB to -35BB) so wasn't going to play for the next few days.

Sat down to check something on pc and decided to fire up a couple NL tables and see how I was feeling. Only put in 80 hands and called it a night but only really two interesting hands occurred.

#1 Villain is 16/16/6 over only 25 hands, so really no read on them. On the turn I checked behind as the board was so co-ordinated to his range I dind't want to get c/r'd and have to fold rather than see the river and re-evaluate. On the river I tanked down to 2 seconds on timebank before making the call but the problem I have is I can't explain why I made the call and I think that is a problem....only reasonable explanation I can make is that I thought my turn check may have induced a bluff shove.

#2 Villain is 39/7/2.17 over only 28 hands so again essentially readless. Here I tanked river again before folding and I'm not sure it was a good fold. Something about the over-bet screamed busted flush draw, and I don't beleive the 8d helped him as the only hand that would make sense would be soemthing like JTss.

Had a feeling I shouldn't have played today after the stress at work but I felt I had relaxed enough and started off well enough with picking up 12BB at LHE and then was up $25 at $10NL after 180 hands before the slide happened and don't think I can really call these anything but coolers.

One other thing I noticed was the effect the change in rake structure had on $10NL and it's not good ;(

Last night: 353 hands, 139 raked, $7.07 rake paid
Tonight: 663 hands, 246 raked, $7.98 rake paid

Well not much to talk about from last night in terms of hand histories, though there is a nice bluff I will put up to get opinions on when I get home, I did manage to spot a couple of leaks and moved up to 7 tabling without too much trouble.

Over all I ended the night 1.5BI down and if I hadn't of payed off one really stupid play I'd have been less then 1BI down....I hit a straight and a guy shoved $11 into a $1 pot when a backdoor flush hit and I payed him off with it.

I noticed two things last night that I was doing that I need to work on....slow playing and being too loose.

For instance, I hit trip Q's on the flop and slowplayed hoping to c/r since I was oop but no-one obliged...board ended up being 4-flushed and I still only had trips and paid off a small value-bet on the river.

I was also playing unsuited connectors a lot out of the bb and raising them when ip but then finding I was getting donked into on the flop and having to lay it down, or getting 3-bet by the button or blinds and having to lay it down as well.

I need to tighten up more and stop slowplaying anything at this level but I think the table dynamics I'm running in to make that hard to actually do in practise.

I'm finding on nearly all tables that any preflop raise from any position will 90% get folded around and take down the blinds so it seems silly for me to not be stealing as much as possible with hands that have post-flop potential when ip so that's why I'm playing a little too loose.

I'm also finding that any bet/raise after the flop will mostly get folded around as well unless villains have the nuts. No-one else seems to want to play a pot unless they have the goods so I'm having to try to be a bit more deceptive to get more money into the pot with good hands but is it really worth it if I can't get away from second-best hands when I let people get there by trying to let them hang themselves? Is it better to take down many small pots than try to take down a big pot and finding it backfire? I'm thinking now that it is.

Overall I didn't find it too hard to play the extra tables as I have been slowly increasing my tables from 4 for the last week or so, and didn't think I made any more bad plays than I would in a night and was able to keep up with most of the action...I did lose track of action in a couple of hands that caused me to be lost in a hand but I think that will improve over time.

The only think I think I'd like to look at now is using AHK to start learning how to play with stacked tables as I did find the one thing that started to get to me was having to look from one monitor to the other constantly to keep track of tables. Having them stacked and being able to pull a table to a different position if needed looks to be a good thing and should also allow me to have the tables a larger size than I currently do to make HUD positioning and reading a little easier.

Hopefully I'll come out of this current downswing over the weekend, it's only a few BI so not really too worried yet but it would be nice to end the month up at least $100.

Well am back again, though know no-one missed me

Had a few things to deal with towards the end of last month along with going back to uni to get my grad dip in education so slacked off a little bit and took the time to review some vids and just release my mind from poker.

Started back up at the tables last night and hit a massive heater though also was playing well I think and only made 2 really bad mistakes that cost me 1.5BI at the end of the night....still ended up ~4.5BI up over all.

It was interesting too, I went in and played position and the loosest and most aggressive I ever have that I can remember, ended up running 26/19 over 1k hands 6-tabling, and it never felt like I was playing out of my comfort zone.

I started 3-betting more with AK and even got ai pre with AK twice against short stackers which I have been loathe to do previously. I made some moves on hands that I would have been hesitant to do previously (eg raising pre with QQ, getting donked into on an A high flop and raising them when it seemed to make sense to do so) and generally felt I was playing the best I have in ages, so let's hope that keeps up.

The other good thing I noticed in reviewing the session was that my EV graph was about even when my +/- graph so it's not like I was running way over or under expectation, it seems like I was just making really good decisions and getting my share of the monies.

Last few days have still been going well, have my FT BR up over $400 now and am running at 6.75bb/100 (not sure if HEM is same as pt in regards to having to double bb to get real rate) over 16k hands and up about $75 so far this month.

Had a small bump last night of 1.5BI drop to a guy I just couldn't seem to get a handle on (was about 42/28). Was up and down all session and back to about even when he showed down a busted flush draw bluff after I folded AJ on a QJ2Q5 board...from that point he just kept playing back at me all the time and just outplayed me or had me in tough spots over and over where I had to lay it down.

As an example, holding Q4ss in the BB and gets checked round. Flop is 325 with 2 spades, call a small bet and turn is a Q so I lead out and get called by villain and MP folds, river is a 4 and villain pushes me all in....am getting 3:1 on my call but I can't see anything I can beat here but know he's willing to bluff hard too so just lost in what to do.

Think I have started to play too loose atm though, was running around 28/14 last night so have to tighten that up a fair bit because I definately wasn't getting enough good hands to be playing 28% of them. I'm thinking I'm running some reverse tilt atm from having a good start to the month so I need to focus more again and buckle down.

Plan is to keep trying to get 1k hands a day in after work, hopefully keep running ~5bb/100 and get my br up enough by the end of the month to start looking at $25NL again. Will keep trying to follow Spoon's advice and get 50k hands in at a level before looking to move up and, assuming that I do that, I should be able to move up to $50NL before June which will put me back where I was before my break.

Yes, I am currently rolled for $100NL but my skills are not there yet so I think taking this track is really helping me get an idea on a few concepts and also letting me find myself with a looser style than the old 14/8 I used to run at FR without really risking my BR.

I'm also having a little issue with keeping focused and finding time to play as I have had to get back to the gym to try and lose weight for health reasons so by the time I get home it's almost 8:30pm and my mind is already fading but will just have to work out better ways of doing it, perhaps getting a gym closer to home so I can go in the morning instead of night, etc.....will just have to see how it goes and if I have to keep going as I am then will just have to get used to focusing more and playing better when I'm tired.
