Slevins first operation
Well as some of you may know I'm new to the site and have only recently started my poker journey. Through the last four weeks I've picked up most of the basics and am looking forward to developing and advancing my poker over the coming 12 months.
Just a bit of bio : I'm 27 and live in London, England - Until 4 weeks ago I'd never played cards barring the odd few games of blackjack or snap when I was about 12. I work for a small company in London and take care of their marketing and I.T. I went through a phase about 3 years ago of playing an online game (which by the way I found completey by accident, I hadn't played many computer games in the past!) I've got quite an addictive personality and anything that grabs my attention tends to consume me, I was soon spending about 2 hours a night playing this game on and off about 5 days a week. Eventually it wore off. The latest thing that grabbed my attention was Ceroc dancing, which a friend introduced me to, I was dancing for about 4 times a week and went to a few 'dance' holidays which were great fun, certainly a little more sociable than MMORPG's but now my interest in that had phased out and I stumbled into poker!
My discovery of poker was quite by chance. I bet on betfair and was betting on some tennis, when it was rained off (got to love wimbledon) - then came a 'free roll' advert - something for free? It grabbed my attention. I played and didn't have a clue what was going on but the spark of interest was lit. I spent the rest of the day learning hand rankings and soon had them memorised!
Fast forward to now about 4 weeks later and I've lost about 3 bankrolls, had 1 confiscated (by paypal for nothing at all but I'm pleased to say they've now released it so I'm just waiting for my poker account to be restored). I've learnt the basics of pre flop play and have half an idea of how to put my opponents on ranges etc, using a combination of vpip/af/position etc...
I spent quite some time a year ago trying to develop a winning tennis betting system! Had some success but eventually lost. I tend to throw myself into what ever I'm into, so I intend to put a LOT of effort and time into my poker. I'm single at the moment so don't have many constraints on my time.
My goal in life is to develop myself and improve to help both myself and those around me. London's quite a snazzy place, I like the clubs, and I like the theatre's but it'd be nice to get a bit of financial freedom behind me which is something I don't have at the moment to just take a break every couple of months. Being my own boss really appeals as well. I'm hoping with the effort I'm going to put into my poker eventually it'll afford me a bit more freedom.
OK enough about me! Onto the operation....
The operation is two fold, the first and most important goal is to Improve my poker. Simple enough. The second and slightly more tangible goal is to increase my bankroll by 4% a day. I've always been fascinated by the power of compound growth and am looking forward to giving this a spin. I understand from speaking to more experienced players on ftr (which is just about everyone, currently!) that 4% growth a day is very ambitious. That's ok, I don't mind that. I also understand that variance will make it almost impossible. That's why I'm not bothered about getting exactly 4% growth a day, but on average 4% growth a day. I'm going to measure the growth at the end of every month and see how far behind or infront I am.
I'm in a very good position because Caseys agreed to be my teacher/coach so I'm lucky to be benefitting from someone that's experienced. I hope the student does the teacher justice!
I'm going to be trying this with two different bankrolls, I have a free $50 bankroll pending from absolute poker which I'm going to use. I also have $120 which I hope to have tomorrow or at the latest Monday on Betfair, this bankroll was blocked because paypal thought my new account creation and depositing straight into a poker account was suspicious, but now I've run through their hoops they've released it so Betfair should receive confirmation from them any time soon - and release my account.
I'm going to be playing for at least 3 hours a day and reading up/studying poker for at least 1 hour a day. I plan to update here once a week, this is my first poker operation and first real attempt to build a bankroll - I hope to be posting great success over the coming months!
