    Default Slevins first operation

Well as some of you may know I'm new to the site and have only recently started my poker journey. Through the last four weeks I've picked up most of the basics and am looking forward to developing and advancing my poker over the coming 12 months.

Just a bit of bio : I'm 27 and live in London, England - Until 4 weeks ago I'd never played cards barring the odd few games of blackjack or snap when I was about 12. I work for a small company in London and take care of their marketing and I.T. I went through a phase about 3 years ago of playing an online game (which by the way I found completey by accident, I hadn't played many computer games in the past!) I've got quite an addictive personality and anything that grabs my attention tends to consume me, I was soon spending about 2 hours a night playing this game on and off about 5 days a week. Eventually it wore off. The latest thing that grabbed my attention was Ceroc dancing, which a friend introduced me to, I was dancing for about 4 times a week and went to a few 'dance' holidays which were great fun, certainly a little more sociable than MMORPG's but now my interest in that had phased out and I stumbled into poker!

My discovery of poker was quite by chance. I bet on betfair and was betting on some tennis, when it was rained off (got to love wimbledon) - then came a 'free roll' advert - something for free? It grabbed my attention. I played and didn't have a clue what was going on but the spark of interest was lit. I spent the rest of the day learning hand rankings and soon had them memorised!

Fast forward to now about 4 weeks later and I've lost about 3 bankrolls, had 1 confiscated (by paypal for nothing at all but I'm pleased to say they've now released it so I'm just waiting for my poker account to be restored). I've learnt the basics of pre flop play and have half an idea of how to put my opponents on ranges etc, using a combination of vpip/af/position etc...

I spent quite some time a year ago trying to develop a winning tennis betting system! Had some success but eventually lost. I tend to throw myself into what ever I'm into, so I intend to put a LOT of effort and time into my poker. I'm single at the moment so don't have many constraints on my time.

My goal in life is to develop myself and improve to help both myself and those around me. London's quite a snazzy place, I like the clubs, and I like the theatre's but it'd be nice to get a bit of financial freedom behind me which is something I don't have at the moment to just take a break every couple of months. Being my own boss really appeals as well. I'm hoping with the effort I'm going to put into my poker eventually it'll afford me a bit more freedom.

OK enough about me! Onto the operation....

The operation is two fold, the first and most important goal is to Improve my poker. Simple enough. The second and slightly more tangible goal is to increase my bankroll by 4% a day. I've always been fascinated by the power of compound growth and am looking forward to giving this a spin. I understand from speaking to more experienced players on ftr (which is just about everyone, currently!) that 4% growth a day is very ambitious. That's ok, I don't mind that. I also understand that variance will make it almost impossible. That's why I'm not bothered about getting exactly 4% growth a day, but on average 4% growth a day. I'm going to measure the growth at the end of every month and see how far behind or infront I am.

I'm in a very good position because Caseys agreed to be my teacher/coach so I'm lucky to be benefitting from someone that's experienced. I hope the student does the teacher justice!

I'm going to be trying this with two different bankrolls, I have a free $50 bankroll pending from absolute poker which I'm going to use. I also have $120 which I hope to have tomorrow or at the latest Monday on Betfair, this bankroll was blocked because paypal thought my new account creation and depositing straight into a poker account was suspicious, but now I've run through their hoops they've released it so Betfair should receive confirmation from them any time soon - and release my account.

I'm going to be playing for at least 3 hours a day and reading up/studying poker for at least 1 hour a day. I plan to update here once a week, this is my first poker operation and first real attempt to build a bankroll - I hope to be posting great success over the coming months!

ok, i started from $200 about 300 days ago. I have done ok, clearing some bonuses, running through some winning streaks. My bankroll is now somewhere between $7000 and $8000. If I had gained 4% a day, my bankroll would now be $38, 647, 645.80. That's why people think your goal is ambitious/stupid - depending on how nice they feel at the time...
anyway, as for the rest - best of luck!

Everyone ease up on him. He's devoted for sure. I'll be keeping personal track on him (not like that's saying much) but he'll get to a good start soon and he'll learn a lot, mainly from his own experiences.

slevin by the sound of it you've dropped the attitude and it seems like you have the commitment to get really good at this game. just listen to kmizzle, he knows what he's talking about (mostly )

    Good luck

    a little number crunching :
4% BR growth per day over 1 month is 1.04^30 = 3.24, so at the end of the month you should have a little more than tripled your roll.
    You'll need (assuming you're using the 120$ roll for NL5) to win 120*2.24 = 268$ or 5360BB.
With a win rate of 6ptBB/100 that's roughly 45000 hands to achieve your goal. I'll let the elders comment on the feasibility of this or correct my reasoning.

    Good luck with your operation.

Hi everyone, well it's been an active past couple of days. I decided to put 40$ into my pokerstars account last night, instead of going out - as I was still waiting for my bankroll to be released.

It went up and down and by the close of the play it was zero. This was for a number of reasons not least the fact that I was very tired!

Anyhow I finally got my 'real' bankroll of 120$ released today it's taken me two weeks - and I've approached it with a totally different mind set. I'm treating this as my one chance to break through into poker so have been doing my best to stay within a half sensible BR limit.

So.. i've entered 4 sng's of 2.50 $ + .25$ and I placed in one of them so wasn't too bad. The good news is I just finished a 100 odd 5$ mtt and placed second! Which means my bankroll is now up 80$ to 200$ from the initial 120$ I started with earlier today, so it's been amazing I'm really pleased especially because it proves the time I've spent learning about the game the past few weeks hasn't been in vein, I had 1 or 2 bits of luck but for the most part I had pretty average cards so I'm really pleased with my play.

One guy I knocked out just before the bubble, stuck around the whole time telling me how bad I was etc.. until I placed second then started laughing that I didn't win, I must admit I found that almost as entertaining as placing in the money.

So... so far so good things are nicely on track and I'm warming up for some evening games as its 5pm now GMT!

    =)
