it was information like this that encouraged me to discover that the religion that my family and elders taught me wasnt what it seemed.
I am quite sure that it was said that sex before marriage is a sin. Something being legal doesn't make it right in the eyes of God.
'sin' in judaism is much different than sin in christianity. the religions are amazingly different.
'premarital' sex in jewish culture was a pretty small sin. it was nothing like the sins of adultery or idolatry or murder, and even those sins were not the worst. they did not believe that a man sexing an unmarried woman was wrong, except with regards to the unmarried girl's father and his right over his unmarried daughter.
women in jewish culture were pretty much not ever unmarried. their marriages were arranged before they even hit puberty, while even if their husband died they were then nearly automatically married to the husband's brother.
in biblical judaism, 'premarital' sex was in effect the man marrying the girl. the reason i say 'premarital' is because in biblical judaism, the act of coitus was the act of marriage, 'premarital' was a rather obscure idea. the premarital sex being big sin idea is mainly, if not entirely, out of catholicism.
fwiw i acknowledge i may be somewhat wrong on a few details because this was information i learned almost a decade ago, and i care not to research it.
And what does this have to do with hookers?
i was responding to something else.
prostitutes were often gentiles.
judaism is probably the most elaborate and detailed religion on the planet. there are degrees of everything and exceptions to almost everything. my point is that prostitution was not considered wrong wholesale, sometimes was even considered good, and fornication was a much different idea than ours is now.
fwiw, my father is very hardcore anti-any kind of sex outside of marriage, except now that he's jewish (or more like jewish wannabe since in order for a gentile to be truly accepted as a convert they need to live within a certain distance from synagogue and cannot be married to a gentile, and tons of other stuff that keeps him from converting) he thinks prostitutes are all right. he thinks so because of his interpretation of judaism, and my experience has been that that interpretation is somewhat correct.
and fwiw, as much as i despise religion, i actually have a weensy bit of respect for judaism. there is no other religion on the planet that comes close to being as sacred to any peoples over the generations as judaism has been to practicing jews. so many have tried to squash it, yet it has endured. it's not about fire and brimstone or seeing the light, it's about duty.
they believe that doing something because it's your duty as a jew is more important than doing something because it will provide the best results. this is somewhat silly, but only when a it's a dichotomy. even though their beliefs about the role of duty are wrong when applied categorically, they provide a valuable lesson you dont find many places.
anyways i hate religion, i guess im just glad that my dad no longer believes im gonna burn in hell like my christian mother believes
