Default Ask Anything About My GF's Different Personalities (Sort of)

    From: http://www.flopturnriver.com/blogs/m...nds-and-i-1619

Occasionally after one of my girlfriend’s episodes different parts of her personality will be brought to the forefront than others for a short (15 minutes to 6 hours) period of time. Some of these parts come out so often that they have names. Here is a list of the ones I’ve seen so far:

Michelle - Normal Michelle. The only girl I’ve seriously considered marrying since I’ve been a legal adult.

“Little Michelle” - The first one that happened. Seems to act around age 8-10. Has slurred speech and prefers her left hand (even for writing). Obsessed with cats. By far the most common.

“Mean Michelle” - Tries to hurt herself. Michelle talks about this one in the 3rd person, and this talks in the 3rd person about Michelle. Tries to intimidate me. I have to physically restrain this one. After this one started showing up, Michelle had about a one week vacation in the hospital while they adjusted some of her meds. Haven’t seen this one since. One strange part about this is that “Little Michelle” mentioned “Mean Michelle” once about 6 months before I ever saw her.

“OCD Michelle” - If you’ve ever seen Jack Nicholson in the movie “As Good As It Gets” then you know exactly what Michelle looks like in this phase except she’s a lot sweeter. I’ve only seen it once, and that was tonight, and was what inspired me to write this. This is extreme, genuine OCD. She tried to force herself to touch a doorknob and started to have a panic attack that turned into a grand mal seizure.

And the other fun part is it’s not a multiple personality disorder. They aren’t varied identities (despite “Mean Michelle” being referred to in the third person), but instead her anxiety forces her to act out certain events in different ways. I might type up some good stories about this later, but for now I just had to get some of this off of my chest.
To clarify on one thing, when I said some of them have names, I just mean the names I put in quotes there which are what I use to refer to them when talking with Michelle or her doctors.

How do you deal with the longer instances of this? IE a 6hr long appearance of OCD Michelle

OCD Michelle has only happened once, and that was tonight for about 30-45 minutes.

When it's "Little Michelle" I'm basically babysitting (especially since she likes to put things in her mouth, like her ballet shoes and styrofoam boxes and my shoulder and her hands and the front seat of the car and whatever else she can get her hands on). This is by far the most common one (other than being normal obv) and isn't difficult to deal with except when we're in public because she gets really shy. I occasionally bribe her with M&Ms to do things she doesn't want to do like go in a store with me.

When it was "Mean Michelle" it was like something out of a Stephen King movie. I had to restrain her hands with my hands and get her into the back of my dad's truck and he drove us to the hospital at like 3 in the morning. That's probably the most scared I've ever been in my life, but I had this weird clarity thing going on.

What sort of things did Mean Michelle do? Did she try to attack you?
The Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which unskilled individuals suffer from illusory superiority, mistakenly rating their ability much higher than average. This bias is attributed to a metacognitive inability of the unskilled to recognize their mistakes

Over the past year, probably 85-90% normal, 9.9-14.9% "Little Michelle", and 0.1% other.

When she's "Little Michelle" her speech is a bit slurred and difficult to understand. It was happening so often for a period that her normal speech became noticeably affected. The first time she spoke completely normal after a period of about 8 months was the first time she went into her "Mean Michelle" thing, which freaked me out in a very serious way. She went back and forth between slurred and talking normally, then after they adjusted everything she was (and still is) talking normally 100% of the time except when she's in the "Little Michelle" mode.

@Ragnar, Tried to claw at her face, bite herself, stab herself with scissors, claw at her legs, hit herself, just whatever she could manage to do to try to hurt herself. While she was in the hospital it happened once when I had went to the bathroom or something and she clawed her arm a little, but it was something no one probably would have noticed unless they were told. The marks were gone like a day later.

We ("Mean Michelle" and I) had a conversation about Michelle as a third person the first time it ever happened, which for a lack of a better phrase was fucking weird as goddamn hell. I had taken her to the bed with some weight on her hips holding her hands so she couldn't do anything or whatever and we just had a conversation.

The conversation was basically her sounding off about every insecurity she/Michelle has (losing me, concerns about our relationship, feeling worthless, typical depression type stuff). There was nothing content-wise that I didn't know about or hadn't heard before, but it was being said in a way and with an attitude that was like she was trying to intimidate me or scare me (actually she did ask me if I was scared). It was a really cocky/bitchy attitude which I've never seen Michelle have too.

The first time this went on for about half an hour. Then she looked me in the face and said, "You know she's going to end up killing herself don't you?"

Michelle didn't remember hardly any of it, which I'm thankful for. I didn't tell her about her saying that until after she was out of the hospital.

    ...Good Question........Where am I?
Is therapy an option? Obviously it can't hurt and if this is all very serious which it appears to be, would you want the mean one or any other dangerous version working it's way out in a more dangerous setting? With, or quite possibly without you?

That's pretty obvious, but thanks for your concern.

I make like Nike and Just Do It. Her seizures cause her to be unable to function physically for a [relatively] short period of time, so I occasionally have to carry her out of restaurants/grocery stores/etc or from the car in the house to the bedroom, but she's like 95 lbs so it's not exactly physically demanding. It is a bit annoying to have like 50 people staring at you but I think we all know I don't have any problems with telling someone off.

Side note: Funny timing, she just started to have an episode and I had to get her from her computer chair to the bed (which are like 3 feet away from each other for that reason). This is why I no longer play fast tables.

For me the two hardest parts are that it's really caused my poker to suffer (both in growth and volume) and that I'm very much an introvert and one way I deal with stress is going somewhere and being by myself, which just isn't possible.

Side note: She's "Little Michelle" right now, and she wants to paint. But I'm playing poker, so she gets to watch TV instead because I can't risk her eating paint. Or maybe she's going to make a fort on the bed instead. *shrug*

The stress has probably worn on me a lot more than I'd like to admit. I have a really hard time playing poker for more than 60-90 minutes straight now, when before I could play my A game for 3 hours straight multiple times a day. Her therapist has recommended that I seek counseling at some point over this.

Side note: She's going to paint, but I had to make her promise not to put the paint or anything she paints with in her mouth or I'd take it away from her.

I very much feel like our relationship is as much of a father-daughter relationship as it is a boyfriend-girlfriend/husband-wife. It's not just because of the "Little Michelle" thing but that I basically have to do everything to look after her and take care of her too.

Side note: Okay she's not going to paint. She's on the computer.

I don't know if I've really answered the how do I cope part specifically, but I really don't know the answer so it's hard to say. I just keep on keeping on pretty much.

Side note: She's going to paint again. Also she apparently (accidentally I think) swallowed a bug that was in her canned drink.

In all honesty it wouldn't surprise me at all.

On a slightly related note, in the previous post when I said she was on the computer, she was posting this in IRC (nsfw):

How many of the different michelle's have you had sex with? And which is the best? I would assume you have like little michelle, for obvious reasons.

Just regular Michelle and "Little Michelle". It's worth noting that in her case it's not a full blown identity disorder, and that it's mostly mannerisms that come to the forefront. She doesn't think she's a different age or anything.

The best sex I've had with Michelle was when we first started seeing each other and she was trying to impress me I think, though that's not to say the sex is bad by any means.

Additionally after her seizures sometimes she will be temporarily blind, deaf or both. We've had sex when she was deaf and blind also (last night actually). Her periods of being blind and/or deaf usually last between 15 and 60 minutes or so.

I think it should be considered somewhat wrong to bang a girl shortly after a seizure.. Especially when she is blind and deaf. However, somehow, I think it's probably just as much chelle's idea as it is yours.

    Also...

+1. Was going to say "this" after many of the things spoon said in reply to my post but it's much quicker this way.

My lady doesn't have seizures or anything but has had a lot of difficult shit to deal with down the years and is pretty dependent on me as a result so I get where spoon is coming from with a lot of what he says.

The question no-one wants to ask.

Do you feel like she's more of a burden than a girlfriend? I mean during a serious episode are you like Eff this? Do you enjoy being a protector?

    Spoon,

    Stuff to ask yourself:

Do you both improve each other's lives? You certainly have a burden taking care of Michelle when she's not well. Is she also helping you out when she's well?

How comfortable are you talking about stuff on a level playing field when you're both in a sane state of mind?

Do you communicate, how do you work out problems or do you just let stuff stew? Studies of marriages have found that the ones that last tend to be partners who deal with shit. It doesn't matter if they get into epic fights (make-up sex afterwards for bonus points) or calmly work shit out. What matters is that they work through it.

When I first saw this thread I thought as many others that there's a certain degree of awesomeness to it, but I wasn't quite sure why you decided to make it. If it was just to blow off steam or a way of coping or is it another form of cry for help.

Now I'm tending to think that it is a form of cry for help. You're finding that your normal coping mechanisms are not sufficient and the stress is impacting how you work as a person. There's no doubt that the emotional stability that has been honed in your pursuit of poker has stood you in good stead in keeping a level head, but you are possibly beginning to worry that you're fighting a losing battle. That at some point you might crack.

I'd tend to be with Michelle's therapist on this and suggest the counseling route for you. For some odd reason I'm not as concerned about "going to crack" as I am of another possible effect. Consider this: If Michelle suddenly and dramatically improved and the seizures and everything else quickly became a thing of the past, do you think you would easily rubberband back to being your normal self? Or would you be more prone to worrying and look for signs of seizures and be ready to step in to save the day? Would you be able to focus 100% on poker for 3+ hours several times per day? Be honest now. By this I mean, the change that has doubtless occurred in you, is that one that has already become permanent? Even if it hasn't, I think it's probably worth taking steps to prevent it from becoming permanent.

I don't think this is really a question of if this is going to be relevant, but rather a question of when. And my read is that this thread is an indicator that the when is creeping up on you.

Also Fnord's post is of course golden. Maybe the best resolution is to explore ways that you can support each other, so Michelle can support you where you need it.

I'm sure you can handle your ego's insistence that there is no problem and you don't need help.

Or I could just be needling Michelle.

Edit: This reminds me of something funny that needs a short back story. Michelle likes women, but growing up with a preacher as a father and always hearing "zomg that's bad" (paraphrased obviously) it became something she wasn't very open to expressing when we were first together. It had started to come out in a very big way before any of this started. Okay to fast-forward to like three days ago. We're driving to this Japanese place and there's a Target where a group of chicks are walking across in front of us in the car and we have to wait and I have "Little Michelle". She looks to me and points and says, "Hey look.... bitches!"

Not really... like, at all. I think you're trying a bit too hard to play armchair psychologist here, though I'm sure you have good intentions and I appreciate the concern.

I am my "normal self". I'm not sure I understand the second question.

This isn't so much because of the situation but because I haven't taken the steps to maintain my stamina. When her seizures and everything first started it took up the majority of my day because she was having 6+ a day and each was lasting an hour or two. During this period I got out of the habit doing a lot of the things I normally did, then after things calmed down I simply didn't pick it back up. For obvious reasons I switched from one or two 2-3 hour sessions each day to 2-3 or 3-4 one hour sessions a day, and have maintained that for the most part since. The biggest problem with my stamina is that I haven't practiced playing longer and conditioned myself to maintain my A game (like I had to do building up to when I was first able to maintain like 95% A game for 3+ hours). Because of mostly laziness the 3-4 one hour sessions a day became 2-3 one hour sessions a day, then 1-2 one hour sessions a day, and then some days I wouldn't even play. The poker stamina thing is my fault.

I'm very aware of what my problems and needs are, and I'm certain that I need help for things much bigger than whatever stress has come from this particular situation.

    Thanks for your posts.

Sometimes she can remember it completely, sometimes she can only remember parts, and sometimes she doesn't remember anything. The more eventful the time period it seems the more she remembers, but if we were just at home hanging out watching TV then she usually doesn't remember much.

Actually, on second thought. Go to a nudie bar, have her pick out a chick and buy her a lap dance. If that goes well, go pro.

Seems about the same. One sort of funny thing is when "Little Michelle" sees me naked in a non-sexual context she giggles uncontrollably.

One of many reasons to go pro. If you're both fairly sane/fit you can negotiate a reasonable price. It's a welcome break from giving blowjobs to guys who can't otherwise get laid.

Sweet. Now I know two people who have random blackouts / seizures and a "little" personality where they act like a child.
Congratulations, you've won your dick's weight in sweets! Decode the message in the above post to find out how to claim your tic-tac

Ok, I can't read it all now, but is this whole thing with Chelle reminiscent of the U.S of Tara?

(for those who don't know it is a show on Showtime about a woman with multiple personalities)

Immediately after a seizure, like 25%. That gradually increases to maximum of probably about 75% over a period of say 15 minutes.

It's kind of interesting, she morphs from one to another, but has no memory of the change nor the actions she takes as the other. Her husband is really the other primary character, how he deals with her shifting and how it affects their family... of course there is a lot of humor and weird situations portrayed, but it is something that I would think would take a lot of patience to deal with... goodness knows I can barely deal with a 1 personality 10 year old, so if you're going through something similar, you have much more of it than I do... good luck

Stuff like that happens relatively often then. One funny example while she was "Little Michelle" is I stopped at a store on the way to get some food (chicken and mashed potatoes at her request) and ran in to get her some M&Ms for bribing purposes and when I came back she had "switched" back to being normal and said she was hungry. I asked if she wanted chicken and mashed potatoes, and while she had no clue what I was talking about (or where we were going) it sounded really good to her.

so 'lil chelle doesn't call you daddy.

Does she think it's a different relationship(like responsible parental unit), or are you 'lil chelle's boyfriend?

What about the other michelles, do they understand that you are her boyfriend, or do they see you as a different figure?
The Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which unskilled individuals suffer from illusory superiority, mistakenly rating their ability much higher than average. This bias is attributed to a metacognitive inability of the unskilled to recognize their mistakes

Thankfully she always knows who I am, where she is and who she is (including her correct age, etc).

We had something new happen about a month or two ago that I wanted to share. She started doing this thing where she would pass out and wake up and think it was about 2 and a half years ago (roughly a few months after we first started seeing each other on a regular basis). She couldn't remember anything between then and now. This has happened a few times, and hilarity has ensued more than once.

Of course she also freaked out and tried to jump out of the car during one of these, so that wasn't fun.

But anyway she didn't know we elected a black president, which she thinks is funny as hell because it's like a slap in the face to all of the racist fucks she knows, and people like her dad who thought Dubya was the best thing since sliced bread. I tell her that one every time she does it, and she laughs really hard every time. I also get to tell her the same jokes over and over because they're new to her each time.

The time period she's been going back to (for lack of better words) is also before the first time either of us said "I love you," so it was interesting when I said it without really thinking. I remember very clearly the first time I told her that, and it was like she was hearing it for the first time all over again.

She hasn't done it since we got engaged, though. That would be particularly interesting.
