    Default Ask Dad

Since I'm probably old enough to be your father (most of you, anyway), ask me a question you've always wanted to ask him. I'll share the sagacity of my years.

Name 3 things you think everyone should do in their lives.

Name the 3 greatest moments of your life.

If you could speak to yourself at 18, 21 and 30 what would you tell yourself?

Are you afraid to die tomorrow? In 1 year? In 5 years?

Do you think you were meant for greater things than you achieved?

Or, if you believe you've done approximately what you're capable of or "should" have done with your life, do you think you were destined to do so? In other words, what went right to allow you to recognize your potential.

What is so special about living to be approximately 185 (or however old you are)?

What was the first sign that you were old?

The births of my two sons would be 1 & 2. No. 3 would be going for a hike and standing on a hill on an Arctic island, looking north and realizing there were no other human beings between me and Russia. Never felt more alone in my life. I still dream about it.

I think I wasted a lot of opportunities to achieve more, but I'm not done yet.

My biggest mistake was not 'following my passion', my natural talents. I'm only getting around to correcting that now.

Days? No. Weeks, months and years? Yes. Remember when summer vacation seemed like forever? It doesn't anymore. My theory is that our perspective of time changes as each unit represents a smaller and smaller percentage of our lifespan as we get older.

Late twenties, early thirties, after you've completed your edumacation, travelled, done all sorts of wild shit/fucked a lot of women and got your career on track. Too many guys 'settle down' too young and pay for it for the rest of their lives, usually in alimony and child support. I don't think men really mature until they reach 30.

Take a breath in between posts old man..lol.

Fuck im 30 and i thought i was old. So this thread is making me feel good about myself.

I disagree with you saying that people should ever get married though. From what i can tell (ive never been married or even close thank god) its like giving up. You may aswell go to prison cuz you will have someone telling you what you can and cant do every minute of the day and grinding your sole into the ground. There are some lucky people that find the right person but in general i think its a huge mistake.

Just look at most married couples and you will see people that are so miserable and jaded that they take every oppertunity to cheap shot their spouse and make them feel like shit. Stick your dick in her and run is the only option imo.

EDIT: dont even get me started about having kids..lol.

Either your sample size is WAY too small, or you have just seen every marriage around you and your family go terribly wrong. Sometimes its like that, but most of the time, getting married, and having kids will be the best moments of your life.

Or i just cant deal with peoples bull shit very well.

My parents are still together and get along great. Also my cock isnt small.

Like i said some people get lucky, but saying that most of the time marriage is a good idea is just wrong. Look at the divorce rate and the amount of kids being rasied by one parent cuz the other one fucked off after finding out how much of a piece of shit the person they married really was.

Where I am from only 1/3 of marriages end in divorce... Not nearly the "majority". So if ur KK holds vs AK, you win at life, otherwise find the next woman, lol.

I do agree that its not for everyone, but a majority of people are happy with married life, where as the tone of your posts is that a majority of people are NOT happy.

Well your taking my post a little too seriously. Im wesrman not wufuguy..lol.

Although what i said is pretty much how i feel, it was overly dramatic for effect. The majority of married people i know dont look very happy though.

Not having a degree closed a lot of doors for me. If I could do it over, I'd take 4 or 5 years out my life to get the piece of paper. I'm a smart guy and did fine without, but I would've done better with. It's a competitive world, and when it comes down to choosing someone for a job, all else being equal, the Wookie with the degree wins.

Knowing foreign languages allows you understand and appreciate the world better, expands your thinking because some concepts just don't translate from the original and, again, opens more doors. I think it's even more important to learn languages now than it was in the past, given globalization. Sure, the world wants to know English, but you've got a leg up if you can speak the native tongue.

Depends on the circumstances. If my kid had turned into some street punk gang banger and deserved what was coming to him, I doubt it. I've always taught my kids that their actions have consequences.

Depends what you mean by treating them like [censored] or being 'super nice'. Women like to be romanced but they don't like wusses that they can walk all over, so it's a not-so-fine line between showering them with flowers and jewellery and begging on your knees for pussy or dragging them by their hair back to the cave and fucking them purple. The middle road is to be a challenge. Show interest but not so much that you look desperate or that you don't have other wenches in the wings hot for your bones. The key thing to remember is that the woman chooses the man, never the reverse, and getting her to choose you is often best accomplished by seeming unattainable. Nothing drives demand like scarcity. "You want some of this? Well, you'll have to get in line, baby." If you're the one out of ten guys that isn't falling all over himself trying to get into her pants, she'll wonder why and get curious. Confidence, cockiness and a sense of humor will get you laid far more often than crying with her at chick flicks and sharing your feelings.

Hardest age was ~14 to 17 with my oldest. Skipping school, bad crowd, petty crimes, etc. A few lawyer's bills and a period of community service later he straightened out though, and graduated high school with honors and a scholarship. The youngest watched and learned and didn't fuck up.

What do you do for a living, and how is it better/worse than your previous 'livings'?

When did you start to feel like a man?

How do you keep yourself in shape?

If you live near toronto would you entertain the idea of an FTR live game?

Is child-rearing as amazing and life-changing as parents like to claim or is that just part of the mandatory parental conspiracy? (two winks for the latter)
  67. #67
I did a lot of stupid shit growing up and I'd like to think that, unlike so many parents, I'll be tolerant and understanding of my kids when they start doing their own stupid shit. But part of me fears that I'll become an old curmudgeon like so many other fathers. Thoughts?

I also like to think that I'll be open and honest with kids about topics my parents weren't, like alcohol, drugs and sex. Thoughts?

You almost took a 17yr olds virginity then got shot and died in your garage by your gay homophobic neighbor?
Don't forget masturbating in the shower as the highlight of his day.

I run a branch office for a corporate foreign exchange company. Corporate sales basically, selling to finance people. Kinda boring but my time is my own so I'm not complaining. My best job ever was as an account supervisor and writer for an ad agency, although I dunno if I ever want to put those kind of hours in again.

You can't go back once it happens so you might as well make the best of it. I think I was too young to be a dad but, yeah, it's pretty amazing.

I've seen parents from both ends of the spectrum - from super strict to totally lenient and indulgent - and I think the best kids come homes that tend toward the strict end. My parents were great and I think I parent(ed) a lot like them, although I made more effort to communicate with my kids than my dad did. I was definitely more open about substance abuse and sex.

Lenient, indulgent parents drive me crazy, cause I absolutely can't stand spoiled brats and that's the kind of kids they tend to produce. I've seen 'cool' parents, too, ones that let their 14 year olds smoke and drink in the house, "because they'll just be doing it somewhere else", and I think that's nuts. Blow a reefer with your kid while you're at it. Oh yeah, seen that too.

It's totally hypocritical because I did all of those things as a teenager, but I grew up and wanted my kids to be safe and healthy, so I had no problem with it. PLUS I knew all the tricks, so there wasn't much that got by me.

Condoning behavior that you don't want your kid to indulge in just encourages more of it.

You can still be friends with your children, but you need to be a parent first.
