Yeah, d2 had essentially the same thing. I forget if we used logout macros or just alt+f4. I think the key that kept it fun was that the ladder reset regularly, and being on top, or towards the top, at any given point gave you bragging rights and I think a special avatar in chat (beyond the hardcore red halo). Because of the reset and the incentives to be at the top, you kinda had to push your character and balance the risk of dying vs the reward of big XP gains. If you just played it safe where you could never get caught off guard and have your HP drained in seconds, you'd never be competitive.
