I think a lot of people fail to really give LA a chance because they go in with these preconceptions of what it is and what it will be like. Sure some of those preconceptions apply, but LA is more of a collection of cities than one city, so they only apply to certain parts of the city.

I live less than an hour out of LA and my rule is I don't go there if I don't have to. Really you're talking about LA county as a whole, which has it's good and bad. Malibu >>>>>>>>> The Valley for example. There's a ton of fun to be had throughout LA tho and the way to do it is to live outside it's borders and go in when you want or need to.

There's a shit ton of beach and mountain communities around LA that give easy access to the city but have more of a small town vibe. It's also possible to do things like hang out at the beach in the morning and ski/snowboard in the afternoon. Friscos a short road trip away not to mention places like Monterey and Santa Cruz.
