I'd contend that even as metaphor, they're still garbled nonsense.

I would disagree, unless I see some data. My perception on this is that virtually all christians believe in the virgin birth and the ressurrection literally. they might waver on some of the other stuff, but those two are tent-poles.

I think that narrative is on the order greater than what humans naturally consider in their lives. But yeah, I left the religion in part because the apologetics were so bad.
