I don't think it is social media that has caused the decline in forum participation. For US players, Black Friday killed our options for places to play. We don't trust the remaining sites to make deposits. Sites are not offering much incentive to forums to promote their sites, such as freerolls and money added games which drove the forum members to be active.

This is actually not what value forums bring to poker players. It drives traffic to the forums, but any smart poker player finds out fast that participating on forums will make you a much better and winning player to the point that you almost don't need or desire small time "freerolls and money added events" It's evidenced by the fact that most of our biggest and highest posting members don't play in these, and freerollers only search for more "nickels and dimes" playing hours on end, for nothing but pocket change. Usually having 1 or two posts on many forums

or more to the point , look at the 150$ mone addeed tournament at Carbon today and all of the people posting in that thread . very few have above 5 posts on the site and they are ecstatic about a chance to play in a 0.1$ tournament. For many of the regulars who have used these forums to improve the game , that isn't even a single big blind in the games that we play.
