    Default Dog Breeds

My g/f wants us to get a dog. Trouble is, she seems to be getting her heart set on a miniature pinscher and I really can't excited about getting a dog like that. I'm thinking more along the lines of some kind of terrier (yes, I know, "pinscher" is German for terrier, but you know what I mean). I want something big enough to wrestle with but not too big, smart and tough as nails. It might mean less short-term pain to bend to her wishes now, but we're talking 15 years or so of putting up with the little rat, so if I cave I'm done for.

There's some dog breed selectors out there that ask you questions and then recommend breeds that might be suitable...example:

What's your favorite kind of dog and why? I need ammo!!!

Given my track record, probably not, but if it's the min pin she can keep it.

I hate little dogs, but if I were going to get one it would be a Jack Russell terrier (now called Parson Russell terrier). They're super smart. They need a lot of exercise but are very trainable.

Poodles are smart, and they don't shed. We used to raise the medium sized ones.

I have a Black Lab/Pitbull/chow/mutt, rescued from Doggy Death Row, but he Stinks all the time!!
I wash him with dog soap and 1 or 2 days later he stinks again. I never pet him because he stinks!!
    Any suggestions?
    He's 5yrs old now.

We had Poodles, Labs and a Doberman growing up.

    Labs are my favorite.

The dog of my life was a black lab. I'd get another but we don't have the yard space and it would be alone most of the day.

Newfs, I have one the most friendly loveable dog ever. Hes huge but little kids still approach him and pet him.

Its bullshit that they say the shedding is moderate, it is insane how much my dog sheds. We have to vacuum everyday or else the carpet gets covered in hair, there are always clumps of hair blowing around the house.

I think I will buy one when I get a house because they are so friendly to everyone.

Black Lab FTW. Black Labs are very smart, friendly, not too demanding, easy to take care of. I've had about 7 dogs in my life, and the Black Lab was by far my favorite.

I've had all kinds of dogs growing up. Cocker spaniel, Lab, Norwegian Elkhound, Cairn Terrier, and now a Boxer. I'm not a fan of little dogs either. Having a behemoth like a Great Dane or NewFoundland doesn't interest me either. I just prefer the medium-large size dogs. You can wrestle and play rough with them, but they're still a manageable size that they can also sleep on the bed with you.

Here's my girl. Females around ~45-60 lbs and the males ~60-80 lbs. They have a lot of energy so if you live in a small apartment or can't exercise them daily then I wouldn't recommend getting one. They do shed a little, but their hair is so short you really don't notice it that much.

My best advice would be to pick a dog that fits your personality and lifestyle. If you enjoy doing outdoor activities then consider a hunting or working dog. My family has a lakehouse and I spend a lot of time there so getting a dog that liked the water was a must for me. If you're away from home a lot, don't have a big place, no backyard, etc. then you probably should consider getting a smaller dog or at least a breed that is less energetic. Like you said... you're going to have this dog for awhile so you need to pick a breed that suits you for the benfit of both you and your dog.

if she wants a little dog, and you want a playful dog get a papillon.

they are very agile, smart, playful, only get to be about 8-10 lbs. i've got 2. one is a puppy. the other is fast enough to rollerblade with me at full speed, for 2-3 miles. very friendly to people and other dogs 10x's their size. i actually wrestle with both of them.

    from the discovery.com website:
first of all it scores really high on friendliness, playfulness, ease of training, and affection.
    Temperament
One of the most obedient and responsive of the toy breeds, the vivacious papillon is also gentle, amiable and playful. It is friendly toward strangers, other dogs and pets and is very good with children. Some can be timid.

If you want a dog that yaps all days long, is medium sized, sheds everywhere, is pretty damn smart, and looks good, get what I have, a shetland sheep dog (sheltie). It's mini lassie

this decision is easy. you can get a dog or you can get a border collie...

Try a weimaraner...Great dogs, very smart.

Theyre pretty big and need exersice, but that will happen. Best dog I ever grew up with.

boxers are awesome dogs. some of them can be really big though. i guess the females are more manageable.

Alssations are quality, had one as a child.

    had a bull terrier,great dog.

had a bull dog, i made him a bit on the vicious side. parent gave him away. something about that dog and a 10 y/o training it to be a killer!!

Parents have a little yorkshire terrier, cant stand it (its like a rat). BTW im tall so i dont like small dogs.

alsation or lab is prob a better option to compromise 4 big dog with less aggresion.

Don't get a dog that needs alot of exercise, unless you want to leave the house everyday for an hour, whether you want to or not. I have an Australian sheppard, and they need to move. Weimaraners, Boxers, Jack Russels,Border collies, and Aussies all need to be run or exercised all the time. It's great when you can but with schedule changes and other obligations they will tear up your house. And if you think that crate training will stop that, they will cost in vet bills from the stress, when they tear up their skin. They demand time. Get a mellow, larger breed than a small wired up breed, and save the hassle. We have no problems with our dog but i've seen this a thousand times. Oh, it'll get us off the couch if we get a dog that needs exercise. NOPE, they just get mad at the dog after 3 months for being a pest.

A dog is supposed to sit and relax, eat, poop and play when you want. Not demand your time. They are companions, not the center of the universe. I had a Mastiff before in my apartment. People thought I was nuts. Too have such a big dog in a liitel place like that. He only ever sat on the love seat and drooled. I had to force him out to go pee once a day or he'd sit for days at a time and eat.

    i had a cocker spaniel.
Easy to train, smart and didnt tear the place apart.

Labs are nice too, and so are a lot of terriers but i dont like little jack russels (or w/e) they just look like they need to be kicked.
