so i have this bottle of Ardbeg that i picked up at the duty free on my way back from Scotland that I haven't even touched yet. seems criminal.

i do doubt i'll like it more than lagavulin, but it's always useful to set expectations lower as opposed to the other way around.

so yeah, i of course had to get the bottle out at last and try a dram. damn. what a muscular, james bond, or as my fiancee calls it, odin of whiskies. this is the ardbeg "uigeadail" by the way, whatever that means. it's really frickin close if I had to to choose between this and lagavulin 16 yo. it's a good 56% alcohol so took a bit of water with it. i think lagavulin 16 distiller's edition edges it slightly but impossible to say without doing a head-to-head. if you liked any islay whiskies, if you like smoke and peat, i can recommend this with no caveats. beats the crap out of laphroaig imo for example, but i haven't had enough time with that whisky perhaps to give it a fair opinion.

ardbeg uigeadail <-- easy to remember for poker players "UIGEA dail" don't let that put you off, has nothing to do with anti gambling. although drinking this and playing poker is probably not so good.

of course these premium single malts get expensive for parties. you lot got any recommendations for good "session" drams, probably a good blend?

i actually think famous grouse is totally drinkable, and one time we had a bottle of bailie nicol jarvie (nicknamed BNJ?) that was surprisingly nice for the cheap price. contrast with one new year's where i was on johnnie walker red and tried to kill everybody and ruined a carpet.

grant's is a perfectly drinkable blend. I'd wager everyone outside the serious scotch corksniffer would be unable to tell the difference between grant's & Glenlivet.

Ardbeg is awesome, not sure if I've had this fancy blend you speak of.

Laphroaig is good, probably cheaper, but you are not going to be blown away.

Bourbon is my session drink, so can't help too much here. Unless George Dickel is an option, super cheap and tasty drinkable. (I think zook gave me that tip)

I'm not a fan of the gin taste but the buzz is fucking awesome. Almost like an opiate. Tanqueray and tonics go down pretty easy if you've had a few, especially if you have a martini or 2 first.

Bombay Sapphire is a gin that doesn't taste like floor cleaner. If I'm drinking gin without a mixer, this is my choice. Granted, it's a bit of a "girlie" taste, by which I mean it probably wont make you gag the first time you try it.

If I'm using a mixer, though, even tonic, I'd go with Tanqueray. I'm sure it's not the best gin out there, but it's good enough to hide behind a hint of lime or a sniff of vermouth.

Tallgrass and Great River make some great beers available in 16oz cans. I am becoming a huge fan.

i was in köln (cologne) and drank some kölsch beer. it's kind of weird how they drink them in 0.2L tiny ass glasses, but apparently that's the traditional way and keeps the beer fresh. i had 3 ldo.

'cause the title change inspired me to drink tonight (It's been a couple of months, just for perspective on my habits), and my beverage of choice was gin/rocks with olives. It's not a martini, 'cause I have good gin, so fuck the antiquated (add some shitty wine to cover up the shitty gin) vermouth.

I listen to a toronto podcast that regularly makes fun of ol' fordsie's hilarious antics. He ends up in the news at least monthly with something new. Smoking crack is the piece du resistance for these guys and they f'n took off the day after the news broke and are gone for the long weekend
