The Big Shoot-Out: Kobo Touch vs. Kindle Wi-fi in Canada

This article compares the two, although it didn't compare the Kindle Touch because it's not available in Canada.

I'm leaning towards Kobo but I'm not sure about the touchscreen. Has anyone here used it? Is it any good? I use an iPhone, so I really wouldn't have the patience for a bad touchscreen.

What's wrong with the iPhone as an ereader? To me that's basically king of the hill when it comes to ereaders. 4 or 4s though.

Even setting aside the massive price difference if she wants to read books, I assume she cares about her eyes and brain and wants e ink not a backlit magicbox, @the iSuggestions.

I loved my first kindle until it broke because I used the experimental web browser (just froze up, support couldn't unfreeze it so sent me a new one) and I loved my second kindle until it broke because I sat on it (decided not to try support on this one).
I haven't read an entire book in the months since I broke it, and I was back to getting through like one a week, so I miss the thing. With that all said it felt fairly new/unpolished and I'd checked out literally zero of the competition a year ago when I ordered my kindle, so I'm sort of here to gush like a schoolgirl that the kindle is worth the purchase to just have an ereader, but can't make calls on the competition so check it out for sure.

amazon kindle has the best customer service ive ever seen. People go oops my kindle broke, amazon goes oh no, have another one.

When mine broke out of warranty by me standing on it, they offered me a brand new one for a fair bit cheaper than brand new price.

    haha

Yeah I was looking for something not backlit, otherwise iPad would be a no brainer.

Thanks for the suggestions. After asking around a bit, it seems like they're both good options. Seems like the Kindle will have better customer service when it comes to replacements, but I'm not too worried because I have also heard about someone getting their Kobo replaced no problem.

I think I'm leaning towards a Kobo... but I'm a woman, so we all know how indecisive I must be

All of this started because I was trying to find "The Mental Game of Poker" but can only get it as an ebook I would have bought it as a real book if I could have!

For these sorts of reasons I finally relented and asked my wife to get me a Kindle for Christmas. Very nice, simple to use, pleasant to read from etc. When I proudly told my family I had downloaded my first digital book on Christmas Day they were like - "Cool, what did you get?" Me excitedly - "Elements of poker by Tommy Angelo!" Family - "???"

Very happy with my wifi Kindle, can't compare since I've never used the Kobo, but certainly the Kindle would make you happy.

Only crap thing about the kindle is its 90's interface. And still everyone that owns it likes it - its a no brainer if you ask me.

If you went the tablet route, im pretty sour on apple but as far as android goes, the motorola xoom is the best value android tab. Good specs, cheap as chips (get wifi fuck 3g) and...i dont have a 3rd attribute.

yeah I have to admit my whole experience with the kindle was "I can't believe how much I love this awesome thing it's so shitty"

I bought a Kobo yesterday but immediately regretted it for no apparent reason. I haven't opened it yet. I just went onto Amazon.com and bought a Kindle Touch for $50 more than what I paid for the Kobo. I am excited and don't regret this purchase at all. So I guess I'm returning the Kobo.

Glad I proved my point, though.

    I want a Kindle.

Would be so much easier to just put down and take care of customers at work instead of real book.

I purchased the basic kindle with ads for $79. It is very basic but it is really good for doing what it is designed to for, and that is reading e-books. If I was looking for a tablet/e-reader I would wait for ipad 3 or the Kindle Fire 2. We should see both within the next 4 months.

I have a Kindle. It's great, and I much prefer reading on a non-backlit device but the proprietary software means you can't download books from Public Libraries (in Canada, at least).

What, you people laugh at public libraries? This is a vastly overlooked method of reading great shit without paying for it and I don't understand why more people don't have library cards.

Do you mean the format restrictions? You can download Calibre to convert any filetype to .mobi or .txt which will work on the kindle. lolDRM

because amazon lets you have different accounts with the same email address (login) but different passwords, and when it comes to entering passwords im a feel player, I've ended up in the situation that I have books bought under both accounts and my kindle cant be registered to both at once. amazon support also refuses to close accounts (lolwat?) and wont merge or anything from what I've googled. soooo don't get yourself into that situation

just change the password to the one you never use to some shit you cant remember so you'll never be able to log into that account.
eeevees are not monies yet...they are like baby monies.

Yeah I mean now that I know I can remember without any worries, I just had no idea that I had two. I guess way back in the day I created an account and forgot about it and then just created another one but went for a different password

I have a really old kindle and an ipad 2. I like both for reading. Kindle is good for outdoor reading because it doesn't have glare. Kindle app lets me sync everything.
    LOL OPERATIONS
