    Default Fairness Doctrine: Thoughts?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairness_Doctrine

So apparently this act has some steam, you can read about it on wikipedia but basically the act says that the fcc can force talk radio to present issues in their opinion a fair and balanced manner. Wondering what peoples thoughts are on this, especially the liberals as they tend to complain more about conservative talk radio being one sided as anyone.

wtf, no. This is a terrible idea. Next they will tell nas that he has to write songs that give the view point of a privileged middle aged white woman from Minnesota as well as the view point of a young black kid growing up in the ghetto.

    Srsly, how is this different?

edit: I just briefly skimmed the wiki article. And I can understand the fairness doctrine when channels are limited, I guess. I think it is made with good intentions, but its a slippery slope none the less.

its an attempt to kill talk radio. its one sided because the conservatives are the ones employed because liberals dont listen to talk radio. if there were a market for liberal talk radio hosts there would be plenty of them.

You have to weigh the "Bully Pulpit" aspect agaist personal freedom to just change the damn channel. I can see both sides of the story, but who would determine 'fair'? Its ridiculously subjective. Are we talking about a 5 minute rebuttal? Equal airtime? And how do you deal with people who are easily offended?

    Impossible to legislate, IMO.

Did you actually read the whole thing?
In 1987, the FCC abolished the Fairness Doctrine, prompting some to urge its reintroduction through either Commission policy or Congressional legislation.
In the 110th Congress (2007-2009), where Democrats hold a majority of both Houses, no legislation to restore the Fairness Doctrine has been introduced.
Obama doesn't support reintroducing it, nor do a vast majority of Democrats, so it ain't gonna happen. It's all just a bugaboo that right wing radio has been stirring up.

Fact: An HIV positive gay American I know was granted landed immigrant status here in Canada last year and now gets free healthcare. Immigration authorities originally tried to deny his application on the grounds that he would be a burden on the healthcare system but then changed their minds when they realized what a political football it could become.

meh... I think if a person is willing to actually make the move and become a part of your society, you should let them in. If would suck to get aids period, but think if you got it and were not fortunate enough to have access to the life saving drugs. Thats such a sick double beat. Cut the guy some slack imo.

Warpe, points in the rest of the wikipedia.

On June 24, 2008, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (who represents most of San Francisco, California) told reporters that her fellow Democratic representatives did not want to forbid reintroduction of the Fairness Doctrine, adding “the interest in my caucus is the reverse.” When asked by John Gizzi of Human Events, “Do you personally support revival of the ‘Fairness Doctrine?’”, the Speaker replied "Yes." [22]

On October 22, 2008, Senator Jeff Bingaman, Democrat of New Mexico, told a conservative talk radio host in Albuquerque, New Mexico, "I would want this station and all stations to have to present a balanced perspective and different points of view," and "All I’m saying is that for many, many years we operated under a Fairness Doctrine in this country, and I think the country was well-served. I think the public discussion was at a higher level and more intelligent in those days than it has become since." [23]

I didn't think the word building some steam was inappropriate given those words, I wasnt trying to blow something out of proportion. I can change the word to "there seems to be some mild interest in it coming back."
