Just picked it up and haven't gotten very far but I'd love to hear who's playing it and how things are going for them.

Have about 10 hours played, I like it so far. Quests are kinda buggy. Pretty much an extension of the last one.

1st experience sucked balls. Then downloaded this file thing and it fixed all the lag problems. Theres also some glitch where after loading, it might become impossible to travel (ie, game crashes)...but it doesnt happen to everyone and is fairly rare. Reinstalling fixes it and you can keep the saves.

After i got through all that shit, the games pretty fun. I was playing the game thinking i was gonna side with legion (cuz bad guys are always fun) and then realized...holy shit wtf independent is much better!

I gotta say, i didnt use vats nearly as often as i did in FO3. The ability to sneak attack crit while using iron sights is just too good. And Ed-E = hax

I pissed off the Legion early in the game and (minor spoiler in white): Once that happened, anytime I went in the wasteland, 6 of those bastards would randomly appear and would annihilate me, I was at level 6 I think and I couldn't even kill one of them before they took me out. I ended up restarting the game.

I just freed the deputy in Primm (I haven't had anytime to really play yet). Iron sighting the convicts in Primm was awesome. VATS is a lot more useful once you've been discovered and need to bust some close range heads.

What are people increase in their stats each level up? I read that getting loclpick to 50 (did that) and science to 50 should be primary concern for looting in early stages. Then develop your primary attack (I'm doing guns and then energy) to a high level. I'm wondering when I should increase barter as well. I'm not too concerned with melee, explosives, etc.

Also, what are people's scavenging/selling/keeping strategies? I often find myself overburdened and trying to sort out what to sell and what is necessary to keep.

The overhaul perk or whatever its called is a must imo. Theres a cool barter perk that makes things that weigh <2 weigh half as much which is pretty cool...but really I find barter by itself pretty useless. The reason is through caravan, killing ppl, and selling things like excess amo/fake money/and useless guns ive never had an issue with money. Theres some speech check things that require barter...but often you will have an alternative (like a speech or sneak check).

As to what to keep...i find that weapons that arent supported by your stats are fairly useless. Aim and dmg are effected by the stat, so something like a plasma rifle just doesnt do much when you only have 14 energy weapons. So i find myself selling anything that isnt supported...as well as all ammo i dont need. This should keep you pretty wealthy, in addition to selling excess armor pieces and any excess expensive explosives. The only exception really is for being a packrat...or for an exceptionally useful item such as a sniper rifle/scoped gun when you dont have one already that fits your stat.

My first run, i liked keeping 1 of everything just cuz im a packrat...but i locked them away in a house most of the time.

Stats meh. I have no idea really. I remember i would go and do something...realize i needed more of x...and just pump that till i didnt need to anymore. It wont be too hard to do this really...for example...

theres a molerat you can choose to heal for med 35...which is easy to get to using a magazine and some points. THen later on theres cases where ppl are sick and need like 60 med to treat which is easy to get to from there...meanwhile higher med has nice effects too so its not a waste to put points into it.

Theres exmaples for other stats as well. Basically, my guns, sneak, and repair always went up some every level...meanwhile i upped the other essential things (lockpick, science, even speech for me) enough so that i can use magazines and medicine to open the next door w/e.

Yeah JKDS is right, barter is fairly useless since you can gamble. I hear once you get to the strip that you can win about 30K+ in caps pretty easily from the casinos there.

Caravan is the easiest game in the world...with the worst rule explanations (unless it was patched).

General:

The game starts with three columns known as 'caravans'. Each player uses their cards to make 'bids' on th caravans that are between 21 and 26 points. The game ends when each caravan has a legal bid, and the winner is the person who bidss the highest legal amount on at least 2 of the three caravans.

So if the board read

21 15 22
17 26 21

then all three caravans have bids between 21 and 26, and the top player wins since he outbid for 2/3 caravans (21 is only legal bid on the first column, and 22>21 in the third).

Card rules:

The game explains this pretty well. Just make sure you are using the arrow keys and not the mouse to do placement of the cards (mouse wont work). Basicaly

Jokers: Great for convoluted decks as they can rape the computer if used right.

Kings: Great offensively and defensively. A deck consisting of only Kings, 9s, and 8s ends games super quick because you can make a caravan with three cards, dont care about order or suit, and also have ways of using excess kings to attack

Jacks: Great offensively. Less so defensively because i cant recall any npc ever attacking my caravans.

Queens: LOL why would i ever use these?

Some standard decks include

Kings and Jacks with either 98, 87, or 876 depending on what you can make

Two suits: only use two suits, then include the other two suits' aces and some jokers to destroy the opponents caravans

I dont remember others, the KJ87 is my std due to not having enough nines and its impossible to lose

Other note: The highest wager i had was 5k on a single game, and most ppl will steadily decrease their bid when you win (like, next game was 3.7k or something iirc) and they always increase after you lose.

Glitches:
-You can discard indefinately during the start up round and your opponent doesnt act in the process. So you can basically start with any starting hand you wish.

-Bought cards havent been automatically going into the caravan deck. Putting the cards into storage, closing the container, then opening it and taking the cards fixes this.

Just play ringo a few times (i think thats his name, the guy in good springs that gives u the deck) and lose a bunch figuring it out. Then play him some more and win it back. Ez game

So I just completed the one for my baby quest and now Boone is a follower of mine. I only played or about 3 minutes before saving and shutting down but I was heading up to the repconn facility to clear out ghouls and encountered one ghoul which was instantly sniped by Boon. Pretty happy to have him around. How many followers can you have cause I've heard the guy Bob mentioned is awesome?

ED-E (found in primm) + Boon = the most ridiculous combination ever and is way overpowered.

Rex is cool too i guess....but the ability to see everything for ever is just too hax...and then you have a sniper to boot.

Caeser extended "the mark" to me so I could visit without being harmed by any of the legion. Everytime I'm en route I'm attacked by masses of legion people. I don't get it. I've seen them before and they were neutral. Now suddenly they're after me.

Whats your reputation with them? Wearing NCR clothing (and potentially other faction armor) will make them instantly attack you all the time. Boone also will automatically attack any legion he sees regardless of if theyre green...hes nice enough to tell you when your about to enter a legion camp though so you dont massively fuck up if you want to maintain legion karma. Also i think your reputation affects it too...but im really not sure how much this is an effect ( since u can wear legion armor and negate this to some extent)

idk, do whats fun. i started the game thinking i was gonna go 'lol legion!"...but then learned that if u go independent some awesome things happen so i switched. Also, a bunch of the independent quests coincide with the other quests...so you can do and get credit for both chains.

For instance, Legion and Yesman both want house dead. So if you have both quests you basically get double the exp. It was pretty hax.

I couldnt bring myself to be part of ncr for either of my runthroughs...just because the gunrunners are part of them and they have a lot of nice shit. Plus camp mccarron has like 3 unique weapons there.

Google gunrunners for locations. They typically have awesome stuff, ncr usually has stores somewhere in their camps that have things too. But the available shit changes over time (iirc) so idk.

Also i feel bad, because i fucked myself over at one point in the game. I was like, 15h in...and warped to a location i thought was safe. I insta heard stupid super mutant voices and looked around and saw 2 super mutants and 2 evolved centaurs. My first attempt was trying to kill them...but my armor sucked and my guns did like no damage so I cried and went into a house. They followed me in and killed me. I reload. My last autosave was when i went into that house. FML. They kill me. My last real save was 2h ago (fail). I used god mode to escape

You have 4 (not 3) factions to choose from for the main story line.

NCR
Legion
Mr. House
Independent.

The independent storyline opens up roughly after you search Benny's room and is started by someone called "Yesman".

Basically, the independent line is you exploiting this yesman (who can only ever say yes) and using him to take over New Vegas.

Just did some research and it looks like it's mainly about the fight for new vegas. If you choose a side you fight the other 2 and if you go independent you fight everybody....hmmmm

What are these unique things you speak of by going independent? I like it cause then I won't be super stressed about making right decision.

Its not specific to going independent.

The game has something like 20? 'unique weapons' which are one-of-a-kind special versions of guns in the game.

For instance, Benny holds 'Maria' which is a unique 9mm pistol. And there is a locked footlocker at a place called 'the snipers nest' which holds a unique sniper rifle. These weapons have something special about them that typically makes them better in some way. For instance, the unique sniper rifle has 1 more round in it before u have to reload...and i think it does more dmg as well but im not sure.

Camp Mccarron has 2 unique rifles, and a unique melee weapon (or unarmed...i forget which). You can get some through quests...but others u have to kill them for. If you arent siding with NCR, killing them isnt a problem.

Theres an energy weapon known as the 'pulse gun' that is hax too. Otherwise i just pray

I started with veronica cuz my first run was initially gonna be legion. Honestly the companions arent all that bad though. EDE has a pretty serious bug (may have been patched...dunno. He used to get stuck sometimes), but otherwise theyre fine i think.
