    Default Favre Watch 2009

    tl;dr cliff notes at bottom

Brett Favre is rumored to return to the gridiron for the 2nd year in a row after "retiring" The Minnesota Vikings are at the top of the list of teams that are interested in getting Favre and several reports have him meeting Brad Childress today.

I think it is a mistake for any decent NFL team to pick Favre up. He is too old and only good for 1 year before he leaves/retires. The only way it would make sense for a team to pick him up would be to sell tickets. He is incapable of winning another super bowl at this point. Not even Joe Montana, the greatest QB of all time, could do that when he went to the Chiefs. Favre's last chance was in Green Bay in '07 and he blew that one. I do not fault Favre for wanting to come back and play the game he loves. He is still better than many current NFL QB's so why not right? Plus it is his decision whether to play or not, it is NOT the fans/owners/GM's/media's decision.

Favre is the most overrated quarterback (albeit still very good) in the history of the game. Yes. I said it. I might not even put him in the top 10 quarterbacks of all time. He has all the records but how much does that matter when you have played so much more than everyone else (the iron man record is the most impressive and got him the rest of the records). He has only won 1 Super Bowl and blown several opportunities to win more due to his gunslinging style. If the Vikings pick him up they will likely make the playoffs, and maybe even get out of the 1st round. But the reality is that they will just be wasting a year of development for whoever their real future quarterback is while allowing the window for winning a Super Bowl to close that much more.

If Favre had to come back I think one of the few teams that could benefit from his presence would be none other than the Detroit Lions. They would be sold out for all 8 home games regardless of their "perfect" season last year, and Matthew Stafford could have some time with the clipboard learning from a future hall of famer. Of course Favre would prefer to go to a team he thought would have a chance to win. But if it came down to it I think he would go almost anywhere. He is addicted to football just like he was addicted to painkillers and its a tough habit to kick. We have all seen far too many athletes go well beyond their prime refusing to retire and making a mockery of their otherwise impressive careers. He is not quite to that point yet as he is still a good QB when healthy, but he is on his way.

So I ask you, my fellow FTR football fans, which of you would welcome Favre to your team for the 2009 season?

Cliff Notes: Favre is probably returning next season with the Vikings being his likely landing spot. Would any of you want him on your team?

I will be in utter awe if he marches into Lambeau with a purple 4 jersey on. Last year he mildy farted on his legacy by playing for the jets. This would be like taking a dump on a cheesehead and then wiping his ass with a packers jersey. Oh boy I can't wait!!!!!! It's like when Bambi's mom died.

I'm pretty sure I would own a purple #4 jersey, and I couldn't give 2 flying fucks about the vikes.

But boy do I hate packers fans.

I think it'd be an awesome story-line to follow if this happens, and I hope it does.

why does he do this? not retiring is stupid in the first place, but going to a division rival of 15 years is like taking a dump on the fans chest and taking the poop and shoving it in their mouth.

This...He was not happy about being dumped by the Pack and apparently would not mind showing them what a big mistake they (Ted Thompson & Mike McCarthy) made. I think they made a good decision because they already had figured out Favre would not know when to hang em up and they did not want to waste 2-3 more years that Aaron Rodgers could be developing.

Yahoo sports reports that Favre will NOT be donning the purple in '09.

    http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slu...yhoo&type=lgns

Not sure if I even buy this, I mean its from a "source" close to the team. Even if its true that does not mean Favre is not going elsewhere.
  12. #12
This is why "sources" should never be trusted. We now have another "source" claiming the exact opposite of what was reported yesterday:

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4152783

Favre WILL be playing for the Vikings so long as he does not need major shoulder surgery in which case he will remain retired.
  13. #13
He does not want to retire..cause Football as always been is Life.
Its very hard to make a transition..when its something you have done all your life starting as a Kid! Also.. i think its simply called Pride!

All the great Players.. no matter the sport.. its something that we always see happen. Weither its Hockey, Boxing etc etc

He could test positive for steroids, bang the commissioners wife, club a baby seal, and still be a 1st year hall of famer. He has achieved an almost god like status in NFL lore which is one of the reasons I think he is very overrated.

He would probably have to do something Michael Vick-esque or worse at this point to not get into the hall of fame in his first year of eligibility.

"Look, I get that the Vikings have a real problem with the QB position. But really, does anyone think the ultimate solution for this team is a 39-year-old pick machine who confesses to having a tired body and doesn’t actually want to do any of the hard work involved with playing the position successfully?"

Personally, I can't wait to see how he fucks up the Vikings' season. Last years performance was epic and will be tough to beat.
