Pretty much this. After someone (usually a female) sees me turn down drinks a number of times, they usually ask me if there's some reason I don't drink.
The reason I don't drink is because when I start, I don't really have a stop button, and I'm totally over-the-top belligerent when I'm drunk. I figured this out by ~18 and just decided to stop period.
Most males on both sides of my family are/were alcoholics at some point, which helped with that decision.
