Historically and in modern times, polygamy almost always becomes polygyny, partially because females tend to exhibit hypergamy while men tend to prefer the opposite. Another contributing factor is that women tend to prefer serial monogamy.

With these conditions, open polygamy leaves an underclass of men who can't get women because the women "on their level" have a better guy than them. This underclass, which can easily reach a majority or near majority, is thought to become violent and revolt. Therefore, we have the convention of monogamy to try to damper that effect, even though men with means are often non-monogamous.

I had to look up the difference between polygamy and polygyny. Polygamy refers to people with multiple spouses, polygyny refers to men with multiple wives. Yes, I can see polygyny is likely to be by far the most common form of polygamy. It must be very difficult for two (non-bisexual) men to share one wife.

The concept that single men become violent is beyond me. I have been single for six years or so now, not once have I been motivated into violence in an attempt to address this issue. If I wanted a girlfriend, I know what I need to do... get a job, or at the very least get out more or sign up to dating sites. Lashing out at society is not the solution, and hating women is the worst thing I could do.

The thing is, if the law recognises the right of men to marry other men, based on the concept that an adult should not be controlled when it comes to private matters such as this, then polygamy should also be recognised as a right. Why should a man not have the right to have two wives, based purely on the potentially aggressive reaction of men who can't get laid?
