This is true world-wide. At least, Americans who spend $5+ on a single cup of coffee - then effectively keep paying by strolling around giving the company free advertising by showing off the branded logo on the cardboard cup - are also pretentious idiots.

If tea didn't put my stomach in knots, then maybe I'd like it. I can't even have iced tea. Soda has absurd amounts of sugar in it. My only real option for caffeine is coffee.
BTW, if you only know coffee as a bitter drink, then you definitely haven't had good coffee. Good coffee is creamy and sweet all on its own w/o any extra milk or sugar. Not saying you'll like it, but if the coffee is bitter, then it's either bad coffee or prepared poorly.
Maybe the Brits just do coffee poorly. Have you ever tried [country name] coffee?
Arabian coffee has a load of Cardamom in with the grounds, which adds an herbal tea flavor to the coffee which is exotic and full-bodied.
Turkish coffee is very strong with a sludge of powdered coffee at the bottom which you don't drink.
Greek coffee is similar to Turkish.
Thai coffee is chilled on ice and served with sweetened condensed milk instead of cream and sugar.
I'm not trying to talk you into doing something you don't want to do, am I?
