    himself fucker.
I like how he suggests he's breathing heavy when he looks like a statue hitting a 1000-yard target so poorly that he's only inches high of center-mass.

Nice! 5" grouping at 1000 yds. Extremely impressive.

My dad and I used to go out and shoot at popcans with a .22. We got so good at it, and we were hitting the cans from so far away, that the bullets were just denting the cans (filled with water!). I can seriously appreciate this shooting.

I had a pretentious response, but then I wondered at what distance a .22 would dent a can filled with water.

So, at what distance does a .22 dent a can filled with water?

I wouldn't imagine it would be nearly as far as you guys are thinking. An open can with water is going to a lot harder to piece than say a open empty can or a full closed can.

Right but a .22 is moving at quite a clip and is generally designed to pierce things. Aluminum (plus other stuff) tends to have a pretty decent give before actually giving, so I think it's an interesting question to know the actual answer to.

Ya, I'd like to know the answer too, just was trying to offer some perspective for the curious.

So then it's time to place our bets.

    I'll go around 150 yards.

afaik this isn't far from the maximum range you'll get shooting somewhat flat

I'm thinking closer to 60-80 yards.

    from wiki

As a hunting cartridge, the .22 LR is mainly used to kill small game such as rats and squirrels. It is also highly effective on rabbits at distances closer than 150 yards (140 m) and on ground hogs, marmots, and foxes closer than 80 yards (73 m). It has been successfully used on large creatures such as coyotes, but range should be limited to no farther than 65 yards (59 m); head and chest shots are mandatory with the most powerful .22 cartridge the hunter can use accurately.
There are some other interesting and telling bits in the article. This doesn't give us a definitive answer, but it seems to illustrate that 150 yards is probably above the threshold.

When we were shooting, we figured the pop-can was out at about 100-120 yards. We did have some cans as close as 80 yards not being pierced by the bullet, but that was about 50% of the time. These were your standard .22 rounds too. A lot of those articles seem to try to jam .22 xtra or .22 max.

Me and my buddies used to joke that at 100 yards you'd only piss someone off with a .22 and lethality would only come from hitting someone in the eye, or the throat. (not that I'd ever want to try)

Popcans at 150 yards, We never even tried to hit.. I honestly don't know if I could with a .22 beyond anything but luck open sighted. You can hardly see the can on a good day at 80-100 and that's because you're firing at a glint. Or rather, about 8 inches above the glint.

I grew up around rednecks too, like Mr. GMML. It's a proven fact that 64% of rednecks say "odd" instead of "ought". I failed to correct them growing up, given that it was usually said while these rednecks held the guns in question.

A full 81% of rednecks pronounce "Gauntlet" as "Gondalet" as well but that's a story for another day.
