    1 Do you own a handgun? (Y/N) YES, a walther p22.
    A) If yes, do you regularly carry it with you? (Y/N) NO, I do not have a conceal carry permit.

2 Do you personally know anyone who owns a handgun? (Y/N) YES, my roommate for starters. My father, grandfather, older brother, and neighbor all own handguns.
    A) If yes, do they regularly carry it with them? (Y/N/Dont Know) NO. To my knowledge, none of them carry.

3 Are you familiar with your state's Gun Control Laws? (Y/N) YES. I'm familar(ish) with them. I probably wouldn't ace a quiz on the subject but I wouldn't fail it.

4 The current waiting period to purchase a handgun in Florida is 3 days:
    A) Is this a suitable period of time? (Y/N) YES, anything longer than 3 days would also be acceptable.

5 Have you ever been in a situation where you wish you had a hand gun on you? (Y/N) YES, at the gun range. It tends to get boring without one (For a less jackassy answer, NO. I've never been in a situation where I would want a handgun for my protection.)

6 Rate your political affiliation on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being very liberal and 5 being very conservative (1-5) 3, I vote republican usually but socially I tend to be liberal.

7 Should trigger locks (mechanism that prohibits a trigger from being pulled without first removing the device with a key) be required on all hand guns stored in a home? (Y/N) NO, it should be at the owners disgression.

8 Overall, do you support strict gun control laws? (Y/N) Nope

9 If you were being victimized outside your home, would you prefer to have a gun on you? (Y/N) YES, if I was being victimized I would prefer a handgun. Only becuase I punch like a girl. I could probably talk my way out of most heated situations. "HEY BUDDY YOU'RE ABOUT 5 SECONDS AWAY FROM KICKING THE ABSOLUTE SHIT OUT OF ME! CAN YOU HANDLE THAT!?!"

10 What is your Major? Aerospace Engineering

    11 What is your race? (W/B/H/A/Other) W

12 What is your age? 21

13 What is your gender? male?

Once Euph collects all the data he needs for his class, I think this would be a good place to actually discuss gun control.

Personally, I do not own a gun of any kind. However, it makes very little sense to have a system where it is very easy for a criminal to have access to firearms where law-abiding citizens cannot. This includes hand guns.

In fact, it has been proven time and time again that areas with STRICT gun control laws actually have HIGHER rates of violent crime then areas with laxer gun control laws.

I am also amazed at the number of people that answered 'yes' to question #7. The point of owning a hand gun for self defence is so you have the ability to use it should the need arise.

If you don't want it to fire, don't pull the trigger (or, rather, don't put your finger on the trigger to begin with). If there are kids around, lock the gun in a safe, or keep it on you in a good holster. This is entirely the gun owner's responsibility.

For the record, I am entirely for gun control on certain issues, ie. keeping them away from violent criminals, bans on fully automatic assault rifles/machine guns, and probably others that I can't think of off the top of my head.

I totally agree that strict gun control laws only affect law abiding citizens. Criminals have easy access to guns and laws don't affect this. It hasn't so far...here or any other country.

I have guns and kids. My guns are all locked in a gun safe. If the trigger lock law was in effect (in my state) I would have to have a trigger lock on them also. silly.

Bans on fully automatic rifles affect nothing. It doesn't diminish crime because criminals don't use automatic weapons. For the record, when you hear on the news that so-and-so used a 45 automatic...that is not an automatic weapon. It is a semi-auto just like ALL hand guns are. Unless you consider an uzzy (sp) a hand gun. All automatic weapons are illegal to own or use unless you have a license for one.
Again, the biggest reason to not inact laws about these guns is that they are NOT used in violent crimes. Violent criminals by and large use your standard hand gun. Likely available for $50 on up from a criminal in the street. Laws do not affect their availability to criminals.

Texas is a very low crime state. Why? Because more people per capita own and carry guns than any other state. Carrying does reduce crime.

    I was just thinking that!

Btw, just checked some stats: in 2005, 11,000 or so Americans were killed with guns; 78 Brits were killed by guns. I think the US homicide rate is about 3 times higher than the UK rate; taking this into account, along with a 5x greater population, guns kill* almost 10 times as many people per capita in the US than in the UK.

We have gun control in the UK.

*this number refers to homicide; it doesn't include accidental death or suicide, both of which are substantial figures.

    Guns don't kill people.

    Americans do.

I'm with Bill Hicks, all those gun-deaths in the UK were by American tourists

This argument is often brought up. The thing is, its comparing apples to oranges. UK doesn't have less violent crime because of gun control, it has less because it is the UK. America has always been a violent country. Think of the old west. I am just saying that you can't compare the two countrys. They are different.

You also have to consider the amount of firearms in the united states... OVER 200 MILLION. While we would all love to live in a dream world where that isn't true, the reality of the situation is that it is, and it makes no sense to have a system where it's very easy for criminals to obtain weapons where law-abiding citizens cannot.

I've actually never heard of a logical rebuttal to this.

Murder rates in the US are 3 times as high per capita than in the UK; gun homicide rates are 30 times higher per capita.

(though we're catching up - there are 3 times as many gun deaths now than there were 10 years ago. Go Britain!)

Not you. Who shoots a 22?

Kidding. Actually, im probably going to pick up a walther 22. great gun for the price. 22s just dont have the stopping power I want if I'm carrying concealed but it'd be fun at the range.

In fact there was a story on fark about a highschool kid who was shot in the back with a 22 and didnt know it - thought he got hit with a rock or something. Certainly didnt knock him down or kill him.

Granted, you can fire 8 rounds in like less than 2 seconds, which might do a little better, but it increases your chances of misses and therefore accidental hits exponentially.

Yah, its purely a target shooting gun. If I was going to own to carry I would look into a glock or walther p99.

The gun I really want is a kimber 1911

I actually went to a gun shop the other day and was holding some of them, and I really liked the feel of the G17 (same gun as G22 only in 9mm), but the G19 was a bit small in my hand and didn't feel quite as good. I take it you like the .40?

I do like 40, but i feel its going to take a lot more time at the range to really get it down. It kicks pretty damn hard.

Put it this way, if theres a bullet you HAD to take -- let it be the 9mm. It has to hit you pretty damn well to kill you. Great story a whiiile back about a cop with a barricaded suspect with a 9mm. Cop took his vest off and went in, he later said something like "If he saw my vest, he would have shot me in the head. I'll live through a 9mm shot to the belly". Guy had balls of rock, but he makes a good point.

a 40 is another story. It'll knock your ass down. But it is a bigger weapon, so it does have bigger recoil which does make it harder to put several rounds in a small target than a 9mm will. Thats the trade off.

For target shooting, take the 9mm. Ammo is cheaper ;p

Just had the presentation on the survey. It sucked, but I'm a professional bullshitter so I probably pulled it off.

25% of our respondents owned a gun, and it was 50/50 whether they regularly carried it with them. Thats .25*.5 = 12% of college students are packing heat... careful out there.

It'd be really interesting to do this whole study again right now, just days after the VT tragedy. I wonder if the rates of who wants to own a gun would go up. I doubt it, honestly. I think everyone, through all the anger theyre experiencing right now, knows that deep down its just impossible to protect against this kind of tragedy. I dont think anyone really wants everyone in their classroom packing heat.

Oh rilla, I used you in my bullshitting. I might have made up some stuff about you. Youre now 6'4" army ranger and can shoot bullseyes at 1000 yards with a handgun, but were totally helpless because you cant carry a weapon on campus. I only lied a little.. youre like 6'2 right?

I used pokerfanatic too, but he doesnt read enough FTR to know why. (He told me right after the news broke that he wanted to buy a gun and i looked up the laws for him -- he can have a gun in his car on campus but not in the classrooms. Us doods in florida cant.)

Um.. other interesting things... 38% of people who do not own a handgun would feel safer if they did own one. 84% of people knew atleast one person who owned a handgun. 40% of people had been in a situation where they wished they had a handgun. Thats way higher than I thought it would be, but the phrase "a situation" is kind of vague. Might be a bunch of rabid dogs roaming the neighborhood or something.

It was 50/50 whether trigger locks should be required. Personally, i think its a very dumb idea. The people who are likely to follow that law are the households that almost *never* have an accident anyway. Essentially this question told me that more people are worried about YOU fucking up than THEM fucking up. Standard human ignorance, though.

interesting read, but you need to read through the people who are still very pissed off and want to kill everything that moves.

I have a glock 26 9mill and a smith simga 40 cal. You have to have a few guns in texas, its the law

Gun deaths per 100,000 population in Japan = 0.05
Gun deaths per 100,000 population in Australia = 2.65
Gun deaths per 100,000 population in the US = 14.24

We had our own version of the VT massacre back in 1996 when 35 people were shot by a madman with an assault rifle in Tasmania. The result was a ban on automatic and semi-automatic weapons. Gun deaths fell from about 500-600 per year to 300 today.

In several Asian countries (including Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand) anybody convicted of committing a robbery or other crime with a firearm receives a mandatory death penalty.

I totally would support this. As long as the evidence was solid.

In the 10 years since the Dunblane massacre in 1996 there have been only 60 firearm related homicides in Scotland.

wow, wow, wow. An attack using a gun is perceived wrong becasue no one should make the decision of weather someone lives or dies right? So why should the court system be able to decide if someone should lives or dies? The logic here does not make any sense at all to me.

America was founded on war. Those in a position to affect the direction of our nation chose to allow people to own fire-arms in case the government they were creating needed to be forcifully overthrown. To be a free society, the government can't have absolute power. Goverment must fear and respect it's citizens and we do this by allowing them the right to own firearms.

Whether or not it's applicable to todays society is another question. But I for one like the idea of goverments fearing its people and enjoy shooting for sport/fun.

Agree wholeheartedly. Don't forget to mention the part about having the right to defend yourself, as police simply cannot be everywhere at once. I know it's a sensitive subject, but 30 of the 32 victims at VT were killed AFTER police arrived on the scene.

In my opinion, instead of comparing gun related or violent crimes in the U.S. to another country, it's better to look WITHIN the U.S. to compare. Places like Chicago and Washington DC, with very tight gun controls actually have very high crime rates. To look at it even closer, think about where all these massacres take place, schools, college campuses, hospitals, post offices, etc. They are always places where it's illegal to carry arms! Seriously, when is the last time a gun show got shot up? How about a shooting range or gun store? I've never heard of it. How do you think gun-related crime in Texas compares to New York?

beating a dead horse by this point...

A little off subject, but still a little on subject. A couple kids at my son's high school today wore shirts that read "I have the right to decide whether you live or die". Now just how stupid was that. You know they only did it because of the VT incedent. There parents must really be proud of them.

I hope their parents reminded them of that "they have the right to beat the shit out of them for acting like morons." Doubtful though considering that poor parenting and a lack of discipline likely contributed a lot to them pulling such an idiotic stunt.

Surely you don't agree that those couple of high school kids have the right to decide if someone lives or dies? I'm guessing you misread the quote. Never the less, my wife and I decided to give our son a free day from school. Maybe a little too cautionary, but we decided it was better to be safe than sorry. Our son said there was cops standing on top of the school building observing as students let out for the day.

errrr, yeah, that is pretty gross what it said. I read it as saying, "i have the right to decide whether I live or die", and even that I can see being a little sketchy. My bad.
