I bolded an important part of your post. It shows that you are aware that many people shape their personal opinions in whatever way will best help them conform to their external environment, i.e. their friends and local culture. What's more, being in a decidedly 'anti-gun cultural climate', as you put it, you are not likely to have easy access to ideas, concepts, and facts which might contradict the socially acceptable groupthink.

Your reaction of "OMG IN EXCESS OF 100 FIREARMS" quickly disintegrates under scrutiny. At it's essence, a firearm is nothing more than an inanimate tool. A man with a hundred tools is rather unremarkable.
