University of Wisconsin-Madison wildlife ecology professor Stanley Temple, who trapped more than 100 cats and analyzed their stomach contents during a four-year study, has estimated that between 7.8 million and 219 million birds are killed by rural cats in Wisconsin each year.
7.8-219?? When your range has a factor of 28, you need to work on your statistics.
Is that guy still part of the forum??

Haha, I hope he's satisfied with the results of his four-year study.
Also, if he shot my cat I'd castrate him on the spot.

i'm actually a cat person myself (got two), and not sure how i feel about this. there are a number of vets that are hoping on the train of exterminating feral cats for some valid reasons.

feral cats are great for keeping the rodent population in check, but they decimate a lot of endangered birds (especially ground birds) and reptiles. they can also be a pretty diseased population, and those diseases get passed into the pet population.

i've had a pet rat in the past, and i currently set traps for roof rats. in my mind, these are two different animals, with the roof rat not getting any sympathy from me. i want them dead (humanly killed) and out of my yard.

the problem as the article mentions - how do you tell the difference between an outdoor house cat, and feral cat...
i hate what i have become to escape what i hated being...
