Yes, get an ipad. So you can do fewer things than any cheap laptop can do. But oh wait, you can carry it around a bit easier. It's just so useful isn't it? In the history of useful things, the ipad has to be right up there as one of the most useful.

Edit: Let's face it the tablet has been around fucking forever and if it weren't for Apple's marketing ability the ipad wouldn't be worth shit. All style, no substance.

Wow, lots of hate. I don't use an iPad very much, but I think that it's a great product for multiple reasons:

1. Although tablets have been around for a long time, the iPad was the first one that was actually usable. Being forced to use a stylus on a super-low resolution black/white screen is not a good user experience.
2. Many people only use the Internet for basic stuff -- web browsing, checking email, buying shit, etc. The iPad does all of this in a very small form factor.
3. If you're a user that fits into the category above, you probably also don't know how to use computers very well. The iPad is very easy to use -- basically, a simple computer for people that aren't good with computers. And it's very hard to really screw up your iPad -- you can't accidentally delete the OS directory, for instance.

I have an iPad, but I mainly use for reading ibooks, and that's mainly just when I'm traveling. It's awesome for traveling, but considering that I work in the computer field the iPad doesn't meet my everyday needs as a user. But I know plenty of people that really only need an iPad and love it for that reason.

I was more just shooting for making a joke that we now have three threads from this guy about how he dislikes windows 8 when we need precisely zero (hello randomness thread) or at the most one, and then jacksawyer gave me the assist on my running whatever of recommending an ipad to people on here asking for buying advice on whatever be it gaming pcs or cars.

I saw zero reason for the iPad when it first came out and was pretty confused, but my mum's had one from her work for the last two weeks and I've played with it a couple of times and I think I now kinda get it - as nightgizmo says it certainly wouldn't do for me, or for you or for him, but I also know tons of people who use their computers for literally only the web browser. So for those people an iPad does everything they need and the extra offered by a computer isn't an advantage, whereas the iPad's size and UI is. People also seem to like the camera shit.

Again echoing nightgizmo, it at least seems to me that it's more the advent of usable (multi)touch tech that's made tablets a goer rather than Steve Jobs's famous reality distortion field, the iPad is far from the only one on the market etc.

My mum fucking loves her iPad, way simplier to use than any other tablet I'd ever seen before it, it's helped push PCs move towards touchscreens etc which I've found surprisingly easy to use, definitely not all style no substance.

Strangely, my life has been going better than ever so I'm not sure where this is coming from. Maybe I'm just more predisposed to posting when I feel ragey about something. Raging online is pretty fun, if you can be clever about it. I guess I might be failing in that last regard.

Yes I just have a severe hate-on for all mac products and of course as a tech savvy person who's been using computers for 25 years I find the ipad pretty trite and worthless. I do see its value to people who literally only want to browse facebook or whatever but there are cheaper alternatives than the ipad. Enter Apple's "you're not cool if you don't buy it" marketing prowess.

Think Apple has also nailed the "super easy to use and reliable" angle too, which no tablet other have. I doubt my mum bought an iPad because it made her "cool", but she did buy it because she knew she'd be able to use it. The App Store is incredible, it never crashes or gets viruses, is super easy to use, etc
