I don't know if I'm going for Supernova Elite after all...
I did some figuring this morning because I was thinking about the mini-convo I had with Lukie about Supernova Elite in that other thread and I'm pretty sure I'm not going for Supernova Elite now. Here's why.
Cliff Notes:
1. I'll make a lot of money this year without it
2. It's hard to play 40k+ hands/week and try to switch to 6-max at the same time
3. I hate tournaments and tournament packages are a big part of the equity gained from Supernova Elite
When I read my very first FTR post the other day, it made me remember what my situation was like in 2005 when I made that post. I was working a computer retail department store job building displays and helping jackass customers. I was living in Raleigh and was going to go to NCSU in the following spring. I was content with working shitty jobs making just enough to get by on.
Then it hit me -- now I fuck off on the computer playing poker and talking on AIM, and in an hour I make what I was making in two days there.
If I pushed for Supernova Elite and played the hours required, I would easily make $250,000 this year, even if I stayed at the current level I'm at and never progressed. However, if I don't play quite as much, just 30k a week instead of ~40k, I'll still make almost $200,000.
The money value from Supernova Elite comes partly from the milestone bonuses and tournament packages, but mostly from the simple fact that you're putting in a metric fuckton of hands. So then, most of your value comes from the fact that you have a motivating factor to get you to play a lot. But I don't really need that; I can easily play 30 hours a week without really trying that hard, so what's the point?
Another factor that's really made me think hard about this is that I want to make an eventual switch over to 6-max sometime this year. And for people reading this who want a reason for the switch, if I want to progress as a player it's the natural move to make. There's no way in hell I'm going to be able to do this successfully if I'm still putting in the amount of hands required for Supernova Elite. Also, in the process I'll hopefully increase my earnings as I improve as a player, so I would likely be able to make $250k this year anyway.
Finally, I've never played live and although I want to start getting into some cash games sometime this year, I really have no interest in playing in the WCOOP or WSOP or any other tournament for that matter. A big part of the equity in making Supernova Elite is in these tournament packages -- something I don't really have any desire for.
So now I guess I'll write some cliff notes at the top and see what kind of comments I get.
