Default i feel like i have watched every decent movie ever made

this makes me sad. I tend to stick to mostly mainstream hollywood movies because they are easier to get a hold of. Can anyone think of some that i might have missed?

LOL, so in your opinion no movie outside of mainstream hollywood has ever been decent? Get a Netflix subscription and check out some of these because you are missing out my friend.

Films from this decade (so you should be able to find a dvd):

    Igby Goes Down
    The Station Agent
    The Devil's Backbone
    12 and Holding
    Mean Creek
    American Splendor
    The Virgin Suicides

Some good movies from the late 90's that should still be available in video stores:

    The Cider House Rules
    Rushmore
    Chinese Box
    Brassed Off

No, not at all in fact I kind of feel like accusing myself of being close-minded. In OP I mentioned i stick mostly to mainstream hw just because its easy to get.

Mainstream produces some good movies, 10x that amount of bad movies, but there are still many good movies. That being said, I feel like I have seen most of them. I'm the type who goes to theaters maybe 3 times a year. Not much is produced today that is worth seeing

Some directors you should look into:
David Lynch e.g. Wild at Heart
    Roman Polanski e.g. Repulsion
etc. only hollywood movies = decent = funny

    Which one?

I got GITS:SAC The Hanging Man, Solid State Society, and Individual eleven, but never got around to watching them.

Also, I recommend Gankutsuou, Full Metal Panic (+ Fumoffu), and Full Metal Alchemist.

If you think you'll have a hard time finding stuff, Zip (Canadian Netflix) is pretty awesome. They have more than you'd ever want.

This stuff is mostly older mainstream so maybe you haven't seen it. I like gangster movies, westerns, crime drama and mysteries and most of these fall into one or more of those categories.

Try Seven Samurai. It's 50 years old, still kicks ass.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
    Memento
    Jackie Brown
    Miller's Crossing
    Swingers
    Y Tu Mama Tambien
    Leon: The Professional
    Chinatown
    A Clockwork Orange
    The Machinist
    Taxi Driver
    Raging Bull
    Shaft (seriously good entertainment)
    Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
    LA Confidential
    Dog Day Afternoon
    Serpico
    True Romance
    Election
    Duel
    Deliverence

Let's teach the man to fish.

My guess is you are familiar with www.imdb.com.
Look for a movie you like - open a new tab for director, writer and maybe producer, and look for what else they made.

For a couple of foreign movies to get you started:

Jean Luc Godard - Bande á part, Week End
    Chan-wook Park - Old Boy
    Takeshi Miike - Ôdishon
Werner Herzog - 'Aguirre, Wrath of God', The Enigma of Caspar Hauser, ... I love every single one he made, and I've seen them all. Hard to make definite suggestions.
Uzumaki - not one of the best movies ever made, but especially if you are used to hollywood type storytelling, it can be very refreshing.

I could go on for pages...
There were some good suggestions here:
    http://www.flopturnriver.com/phpBB2/...ghlight=movies

    Unfortunately it derailed.
I go about movies the same I choose books. I read the first few sentences of a whole bunch, and if it catches me, I go on, otherwise I dump it again.
Now that you can get yourself a dozen movies in a day over the internetz, I think this is a viable option.
None of the ones I posted are easy to digest, and I can't watch them any day of the week, but I suggest you at least give them a try.

    Ballsy suggestion.
I'm trying to figure out which one is more likely to get the average movie goer to never ever see a Polanski film again: Repulsion or Le Locataire.

This thread makes me want to see both again.

try moving onto some classics like old hitchcock movies and older films that have been remade into garbage in recent years such as: manchurian candidate, bedazzled, the day the earth stood still. there are tons

    if that fails, try tv?

I agree with a bunch of these, however I think he missed a few that I haven't seen mentioned yet...

    Grosse Point Blank...John Cusak
    Reservoir Dogs...Quentin Tarantino
    Dogma...Ben Aflick/Matt Damon
    Good Will Hunting...BA/MD
    Better Off Dead...John Cusak
    Dream a Little Dream...Corey Haim/Corey Feldman
Two Mules for Sister Sara...Clint Eastwood
    Highlander...Sean Connery
    Willow...Val Kilmer
    Equilibrium...Christian Bale
    Real Genius...Val Kilmer

I'm sure there are a few others that I'm missing. I tried to keep it in the "Light entertainment" area and skipped over some of the deaper movies...

    City of God is quality.

The Football Factory is quite a laugh and a good slice of London casual culture (avoid Green St like the plague).

Infernal Affairs (shits on Hollywood make over - The Departed).

2008 was rather a good year for film too (2007 really sucked). Some films from last year that I'd recommend:

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas
    In Bruges
    The Visitor
    The Wrestler
    Son of Rambow
    Cassandra's Dream

Any video store worth its salt should have all of them and probably in the new releases section.

Some good ones I've seen lately:

    Frankenhooker:

Boy accidentally trashes fiancé with remote lawnmower, then pieces her back together with parts from street hookers... Ending is just plain awesome.

People under the stairs - Wes Craven

    Very nicely done... good acting
Speaking of Wes Craven - if you haven't seen it: Last House on the Left

Night of the Comet - Very nice endtimes movie... if you like apocalyptic / zombi stuff, you'll like it.

Can't plug it enough: Dellamorte Dellamore.
Makes my top-x list of best films ever made.

    Fido
Matter of taste - If you liked Shawn of the Dead, you'll like this too.

One thing that has struck me lately is how amazing some of those kid actors are. I watched Childs Play again after like 10 years... He's a fucking kindergardener and he's destroying half of the piece of shit models/actors who hit the hollywood bigscreen lately.

But anyway... just came home from watching Let The Right One In - which so far is high on the list of best movies I've seen this year.
If it's in a theater near you, go! Support these movies.
I just looked it up on Imdb, and apparently some piece of shit no-talent hollywood producer is already in the process of remaking it. These assholes need to be castrated with a rusty spoon.
What the fuc.k is up with all those remakes?
Last Samurai, The Ring, Dawn of the dead (it was fine, ,but WHY???), Psycho for fucks sake - they remade it shot-for-shot. These motherfuckers need their eyes picked out by a flock of mad crows. Now they're remaking the first Childs Play movie!
GAH I'm so tilted I can't even write.

Anyway: Let The Right Ones In
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1139797/

    - unnecessary trivia: There's something going on with german movie titles... there's apparently a dark room somewhere where some waterheaded idiots retitle every movie that opens here, even the ones that aren't even synchronized - even if the title means the same in german they retitle it and add a tagline.
I'm 100% positive that Slither did not even start here because they retitled it in a way that no self-respecting adult would consider buying the ticket.

    BUT

The german title for this one is perfect. I don't know how they did it. I guess it's the old monkeys-with-typewriter thing... you just have to wait long enough.

Gus Van Sant who directed the remake (and is a great director IMO) allegedly was forced to make it by his contract with Universal. In his opinion the original was already perfect, so he decided to redo it shot-for-shot as retaliation and to mock the practice of remaking classics for profit. True story? No idea.

If you check the film's imdb page you'll notice it's called "Låt den rätte komma in", guess what that means in english? :P

Erm... I know obviously. But I suppose it will be advertised under the english title in american theaters.

I wasn't aware that Gus Van Sant did the Psycho remake... that's funny. So far I wasn't too impressed with him, but funny story if it's true.

Perhaps you should give that oldies movie channel a try.Ive found, that if I start to watch one of the (old black n white)movies there, they are very interesting. They dont call it the Golden age of Hollywood for nothing.Theres alot of oldies I havnt seen, and Im sorta on the older side. You are missing out if you never watch tcm.
