Hepatitis, in this sense, is not a chronic condition and is a symptom of the EBV that causes mono. It can cause permanent liver damage, but it is very different from Hep C.
Biondino is correct. Cirrhosis is a consequence of chronic liver disease, but the term hepatitis simply refers to inflammation of the liver. It can be caused by things such as viruses like Hep. A-E or Ebstein-Barr(your mono), metabolic disorders, toxins (alcohol, pharmaceuticals, etc). Hepatitis can be a symptom of mono, but you misunderstood your doctor if he said you could specifically get Hep. C
