but I want to hear what peoples favorite good/expensive/high alcohol content beer is

and I want to go buy these beers and try them out for myself

Dogfish Head IPA is one of my favorites. just go to a grocery store with a big selection and pick out some belgian beers. its really hard to go wrong with one. really, the only gross beer ive had is miller, bud, etc.

Kilkeny is a delicious irish cream ale.

My new favorite pale ale is sleeman's 20th anniversary edition. Its a canadian make so I don't know how available it is anywhere else.

My fave is Okanagan Springs 1516 Bavarian Lagar (BC Canada company). It is the crispest beer I have ever drank.

From their website: Our Bavarian Lager is brewed to celebrate the landmark Bavarian Purity Law of 1516, which states that only four natural ingredients shall be used to brew beer: barley, water, hops, and yeast. This flavourful lager has a crisp, clean finish and a rich golden colour. (5% alcohol)

For a higher alcohol content, they also have an Old English Porter which they describe as:

Nearly black with a creamy head and a nose reminiscent of dry stout, our Old English Porter has a full, rich flavour. (8.5% alcohol)

    mmmm, beer...

hehe, pbr is becoming the fashionable thing to drink when you want bad beer. i will never forget this moment in my life, as it is defining as my utopia: 3.99 for 12 pack of pbr and some small gas station in my home town in iowa.

btw im not trying to say that you were trying to be fashionable

neways, I had a beer-tasting fest this past weekend, but I cannot remember any of the names. They were mainly v v good though. I'm just not a big beer drinker, if I'm going to sit down and have 1 or 2 I'll have something really nice, if I'm going to drink a ton throughout the day, I do, dare I say it, tap the Rockies.

I'm a big fan of Fat Tire right now. I also like a couple of the Sam Adams seasonal brews - Winter(hearty & stands up to winter meals) & Summer(good but light, lemony).
My friend's are all into Blue Moon right now. It is serve with a slice of orange but I have a hard time putting fruit in my beer.

Blue Moon is an excellent beer. Being from Wisconsin though, you can't beat New Glarus. It is a microbrewery and their Spotted Cow is excellent. I am going back home to visit for Memorial Day and can't wait to put back a few.

My beef is more with putting fruit in beer. Tell me you like Blue Moon because you like wheet beers, or even better because you like hefeweizen. Don't say it goes well with an orange.

There's a bar 7-8 blocks from my house that has 55 beers on draft, 10-12 are seasonal. Spenda started with a seasonal porter, don't know the company. Then had Flying Dog's Garde Dog. Then we had a red ale and an amber. Helps a lot doesn't it.

I started with the Stone Russian Imperial Stout. OMG I love the thick creaminess. Any beer that uses motor oil to describe the body is thumbs up in my book.

    Hacker Pschorr's Weisse.

Unfortunately not every bar or liquor store carries it, so instead I will often have Blue Moon, or Fat Tire. Red Hook ESB is also something I will willingly drink.

As far as shitty American water-beer goes, I'll drink Miller Lite.

If your beer needs fruit it's not very good beer. SO HATAS HATE ON.

Some beers I've really been digging since I moved to Cali:

Chau Tien - this beer rocks AND has a funny story http://www.paleale.com/
Big Daddy IPA - my favorite IPA atm
    Double Daddy Imperial IPA
    Racer 5 IPA
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale - the old standby

omfg this is so stupid. its not that the beer needs it to taste good, its just a matter of fact that some beer goes well with fruit. for example, i would never put a lime in a stout or porter, but with light lagers and wheat beers (lemon), they just go well together.

Yep, I've tried it. It is better with the orange, but I am not confident enough in my manhood to walk around with an orange in my beer. In actuality since sarcasm doesn't travel well through the internet, I like a heartier beers as I get older. Not quite to the chewy ones yet though.

Since we're on the topic, another good beer I used to drink with fruit is Kansas City's own Boulevard Wheat w/ a lemon wedge. They make a pale ale too, but the Wheat is far more popular. I don't think you can get Boulevard outside of the Midwest though unless you are at a specialty restaurant/liquor store.

As for mowing beer, Miller Lite is right. The advertising is right, it has more flavor than other light beers.
As for canoe trip beer, Natty light is GTG. Half of them end up in the river anyway. That and I grew up on the stuff.

yuck on both accounts. (not directed at you) if you find drinking a beer with fruit in it feminine, but you drink light beer, you need your head examined. light beer is for chicks. it just doesnt taste good. heineken is okay, but the light is an abomination. corona i already dont like, but make it light and its sooooooo bad.

and for canoe trips i gotta stick with flomo. PBR is the way to go. or if you live in texas, Lone Star beer is the way to go.

How the hell can you drink 18-24 Bud fats? or PBRs? If it is over 80 degrees and I'm active I'm not drinking a hearty beer. Light beer has its purpose.

I concur on Lonestar, but Shiner Bock is a better Texas beer.

zook hit it on the head.
Beer is made with water, barley, hops and yeast. If you're arguing good beer you can't include beer + fruit.

If you love a heiferweizen, then you like blue moon without an orange: good
You think the orange is necessary for blue moon to be good: bad

    Corona without a lime: bad
Putting a lime in Natty Ice: good

I'm not going to make fun of your choice of drink, or give you a lecture about why you're wrong. Get drunk have fun. But if you're debating "good beer" you should be arguing for beer, not a flavored drink.

I hate hating in a beer thread. I blame spenda for dragging me into this one.

i think i see where you arent understanding (at least what im saying). i dont think a blue moon needs an orange to be good, i just think it tastes better with it. its like a garnish.

corona, on the other hand, pretty much needs a lime to taste decent, because the lime is better than the shitty ingredients they use.

its like, i grill some steak, and i decide to add some sauce to it. would the steak still taste good w/o the sauce? yes! but would it taste better with some sauce? yes!

yeah, it wasnt the greatest analogy because the spectrum of quality/expensive steaks goes pretty damn far. but in any case, they always season it, or marinate it, or do something to it.

Anyboby tried EKU? It's a dark German beer that is equivalent to 6 buds. I love it!! Hard to find though.

Yeah, I'll go ithout the fruit in my beer too. I just can't seem to enjoy it. I guess I like my beer to taste like beer not fruit salad.

Try Arigant bastard, also from So Cal, but very good with a bold flavor and higher alcohol content. If that's the thing you like, iI think you'll dig this brew a lot.

When I don't have any on and I will drink fat tire or Sam Adams.

The only time I touch the cheap American brands is either when I'm visiting friends and free beer is good beer, or when I'm hosting a 20 layer homegame and supply a cooler full. Between the first and second six pack hey all start to taste the same.

I'll be in Denver this weekend hitting up the micro brew strip.

    I'm giddy.
