Default I took a picture of the sun on my cell phone.

It basically looks like a big white circle (much larger than the sun), but oddly has a small black circle on the inside. This black cirlce is probably about the size of the actual sun. Here is a rendition:

So I have a question for anyone that knows the physics of lenses and/or photography. What is this black cirlce in the middle?

I've seen other pictures of the sun taken on good cameras (as opposed to my crappy cell phone camera) and they look similar except on good cameras there is no black circle in the center.

I knew FTR would be the right place to ask a question about science.

it probably has less to do with lenses and more to do with the cameras light sensitivity.

Unfortunately I can't get it off my phone. I don't have the cable that connects the phone to the computer (because I didn't spend the extra $30 for it), and I can't send text messages (because I don't spend the extra $5 a month for that). Moral of the story: I'm cheap.

Renton, I appreciate the effort. I would have fallen for it if Xianti hadn't marked it before I saw it.

Xianti, thank you very much for saving my eyesight.

So you think that perhaps if the light intesity is too high at a given location, it shows up as black for some reason?

If all pictures have a black dot I would say the sun burnt a hole in your camera's retina. Usually if it's saturated (with electrons) it would be white, if you push electronics past the saturation point they typically break.

    It's a black hole. Duh.

I just spent 10 minutes studying the sun intently and now i see a similar black spot. I think we're pretty heavily humped on this one, guys. Pretty clear that the end is nigh.

Camera still works fine, no black circle in the middle for regular pictures. Just the sun. So that's not it.
