Default If your Christmas was bad...

Ok, so I pretty much have no where else to rant and rave... so here goes.

It was Christmas weekend this past weekend, and I left work Thursday expecting a good weekend with lots of fun and family time. Friday opens and things are good, we are prepping the house for Christmas and the family being over Saturday and preparing our food that we are taking to the in-laws get together on Christmas eve.

So around 4pm, wife is dressed, coiffed and ready to go, so are me and the kid. We are packing the car, prepping the last few dishes, I have a pretty good cold going, but DayQuil is holding it at bay, even though I'm tired. Jump ahead to 4:30 and the wife is preparing the last dish we are taking to Christmas eve, Bruschetta, and as she preps to slice the bread, she is sharpening a knife and severs her finger to the bone, cutting tendons and everything in the path.

Drop what we are doing, pack her hand, attempt to stop the blood flow, get things under control, and decide to drop everything at the Christmas celebration on the way to the hospital. We get to the ER, and they examine her, stitch her up, recommend a doc to contact to arrange surgery to repair the damage and pack her up in a huge wrapping.

Back to Christmas Eve, everyone waited for us for presents, which was nice, but we were also told this was a 'White Elephant' gift exchange this christmas... no one else was. So we bought only two gifts for the exchange... everyone else bought for everyone else. This is my sister-in-law's way of getting even with my wife for other squabbles, and we look like shit now. Things go along as expected, and we head home around 9:30. Of course, I need to find a 24 hour pharmacy for painkillers and such for my wife, and have to leave out again, with my cold now fully raging and head for the only 24 hour pharmacy in the county.

That goes ok, and the rest of the evening does as well... so jump ahead to Christmas day. When opening presents with my mother and brother, who came over early, my daughter wrapped a duplicate gift for my brother, who didn't get much anyway (he drives me nuts) and he opens two of the same thing... much to his disappointment, which prompts my wife to turn around and explain the mistake, and give him cash on top of it. (WTF?)

So dinner happens, with the parents, my other sister in law, my brother and my wife and daughter there. Dinner goes pretty well except for my wife not telling me what to do to help then yelling at me to get the fuck out of the way... while she tries to do things with a big wrapped up claw.

We eat, and then things go to hell. Wife blows up at her mom and sister, telling her mom to shut the fuck up, tells her sister she is just fucking selfish and to get out of the house, and then proceeds to cry her eyes out all over her mom, as her dad sits in the car with the dog waiting to leave.

Add on top of that, I'm now fully into walking pnemonia and having a hard time staying sane. I'm popping dayquil like M&Ms and my nose keeps running down my face. I've gone through two boxes of tissues and am blowing constantly...

Page forward to Sunday, where I managed to sleep most of the day, about 15 hours total out of 24, but still had to hear about all of the drama more and blah blah blah.

Now it's Monday and I'll be honest, I'm freaking glad to be back at work at a job I can't stand.

So... if you had a crappy Christmas, I hope this makes you feel better. What did I get this Christmas? A bill for the ER, guaranteed Surgery for my wife, a severe cold, and still didn't really get any gifts I am that excited about.

Hope yours was better... here's to the start of 2011!

Nothing sounds out of the ordinary.

This is roughly how Christmas is every year with my family.

Save the hot cocoa caroling and warm moments by the fire for Lifetime Movie network. In real life your family gets drunk, yells at each other, and someone generally ends up in the hospital.

+1, And depending on your location, you end up shoveling lots of snow to top it off.

Agreed, and I was ready for the drunken 'you're a bitch' argument to erupt, but not for the rest of it. And yes, I shoveled snow with snot freezing to my face, Saturday.

Maybe cuz we're Jewish but we always get together for Christmas with family and friends, have a Christmas Eve dinner, open gifts, and no drama really ever erupts.

The only time anything out of the ordinary happened was when my pops had to tell his Catholic family he was converting to Judaism.

Mine wasn't all bad.. I just sorta dislike the holiday.. esp since my brother and sister are materialistic as hell and are attention whores on xmas with their gifts to my nephews. They both are detached from reality, and buy presents that carry implied promises that they never keep. One year my sister and brother both chipped in to buy a swing set/fort sort of thing for the backyard.. this was 2 or 3 years ago and while it is now functional, its still not fully built. This year my brother got my oldest nephew a set of golf clubs, but the occasion where he actually takes him golfing is going to be pretty rare I would predict. Even worse, my sister gave him a video game on xmas eve and explicitly promised to wake up on play it with him on xmas day. When he woke up and went to wake her up she yelled at him, "If you open my door one more time you won't get any more presents!" This was at like 11am... she got up at like 2pm...

But besides that it wasn't all bad I guess. My mom gave me a really cool food book called Noma that she found on her own (normally shes just like "what do you want?" and there's no surprise) and there was relatively little family drama.

Not really bitching, just dropping notes about my Christmas.

My gay brother left for Chile today to stay 3 months with his boyfriend he met on the Internet. The guy had stayed 3 months up here with us over the summer. He's pretty cool.

From my parents I got some money that they owed me. Michelle's parents got me some pajama pants. That was about it in the gift area of things.

Michelle's really scared she might be pregnant. She has done this every time she has had a period since I've known her. I wish she'd stfu about it though.

Canada; the country all tucked away down there...
I'm saying this in all seriousness, I'm married and therefore have the "in-law" side of the family to deal with. They are dramatic, bigotted, selfish with a painfully low IQ. If theres one thing I've learned over the last number of years is that family is highly over rated.
My wife has finally come to the conclusion that if she wont let a friend treat her poorly, then why should a family member be allowed?

Well let's see. I've been sick since Christmas eve and I'm not even sure I'll make in to work tomorrow at this point. Everything you can think of I pretty much have it. Fuck Christmas. I'm going to Hawaii next December.

Wow. I didn't think there were others that hate Christmas as well. It's just another holiday where my family gets to ask me "Why didn't you become a doctor?" or say "I still think you're gonna be a doctor." I actually bowed my head out of the Christmas arena this year and chose not to celebrate it. To be honest, it was a BIT more depressing than I thought (knowing my friends had a good Christmas and all).

I've replaced my Christmas with Festivus which really consisted of hanging out with my friends that returned from school at a bar and getting drunk. I highly suggest others do so as well. Fuck Christmas.

    Also, Monty, funny story.
That's how winners play; we convince the other guy he's making all the right moves.

Sadly, my friends were supposed to get together between Christmas and new years, and no one has let me know if it will happen or not. One left town until Thursday, the other leaves town again on Monday. And the third is a cop, so his hours are always f'd up. If no one gets together, guess I'll have two bottles I bought as gifts to drink myself... hmm... maybe that isn't such a bad thing.
