Not a pussy - just doing his job. His job is to impose a sentence after a jury brings back a guilty verdict. The Nevada legislature has decided that the crime she was convicted of carries a mandatory life sentence. The judge's hands were tied.

It is an appellate court's decision to determine if the law is unconstitutional - and this case will almost certainly make it to the State Supreme Court. A trial court judge, rarely, if ever, makes this type of decision, and in some states do not even have the power to rule on the constitutionality of a law.

^ also, it's interesting to note the judge's reaction to having to impose this sentence (see last 30 seconds of the youtube clip). He, in effect, questioned the motivation of the prosecution in cases such as this with respect to choice of charge and no option of plea bargaining. He doesn't seem very happy that the woman concerned is going down for life, but it's likely he has no other option.
