Saying the iphone is a gimmick phone is retarded. It's easily the best phone out there. It covers all my management consulting needs and is great for my personal entertainment as well. The only downfall is if your work uses lotus notes for email, iphone does not support this. It's great with exchange and all other email formats though.
I will admit the keyboard takes some getting use to but I have no problem writing emails and texts.
FWIW OP, the only other phone I'd consider is the G1 google phone. That's pretty sweet too.
Oh, and from a purchasing standpoint, trading up iphones from first gen to second gen (3g) was relatively painless. There were large discounts on the tradein value and plans were reset avoiding any contract fees. Something to keep in mind if you buy the 3g version and then the next iphone iteration comes out in 6 months (5 years canada time).
Blackberrys are ok I guess but I'll never own one. They're ugly, lack a lot of application support (let's admit the Itunes app store is amazing not to mention the new iphone OS 3.0 is going to blow the old iphone away), and they're simply just a business phone. It's not the entertainment gadget that will improve your life like the iphone. I spent a train ride to a client site watching Deuces Cracked episodes on my phone, briefly interrupted by phone calls, only to seamlessly fade into the movie again. I'd marry this thing if I could (or if I could fit my dick into that tiny headphone jack).
