It isn't just the Mayan calendar that predicted it. Several other societies predicted the same thing for the same date apparently. Native Americans I believe think that it will be the beginning of a new life.

So really it doesn't have to mean the complete destruction of the world, could just mean a big change of some sort. Or they could just all be wrong.
