    Default ITT: Growing houseplants

House plants are the best kind of decor imo. But I have a long history of half-assedly buying and killing plants.

Ideally I want either low-maintenance (water rarely) or simple (water a little bit everyday) kinda thing. I struggle to keep routines for most things so anything requiring a complicated watering schedule (i.e. water it when it's no longer moist... isn't going to work.)

I want plants for home and my office, and I'm happy to make an investment if I can be assured all the shit isn't gonna die instantly.

Any and all help (and mockery) appreciated.

One time I had a plant and it got moldy. So I punished it by not giving it any more moisture and then it died.

Dude get a bamboo money tree. You don't have to do shit except watch it grow.

    Bamboo works. Ferns? lol.

Coleus are great indoors. They aren't usually marked as indoor plants, but ours have been thriving for a bit (meaning, the same plant and it's many clippings are all still alive). So yea, we bought one $5 coleus and have gotten maybe 30-40 clippings in 18 months? My gf is big-time into this stuff, like seedlings and indoor lighting and....anyways. Point is, they are low maintenance and attractive, unlike any woman.

I wouldn't be surprised if a house with adequate plant life would produce clean enough breathing air that human lifespans would increase by a year or two or even more

    Yes, I am old.

i probably would have a much easier time of growing pot, than houseplants. Pot would require close attention and it would always be on my mind. Houseplants are more difficult because they often require sporadic attention and without a prescribed care plan, I just forget entirely.

Plants just make a room look fantastic, super zen and such. I appreciate all the suggestions, I figured some people would be good at this and have the knowledge.

My mother always had an aloe plant. We would cut off a piece and rub on abrasions or burns or whatever. Soothing and seemed to work very well

Aloe Vera will survive in a puddle of water. One more thumbs up for that.

You can literally just put it in a pot full of water and it will survive.

    chili plant FTW!

Looks pretty and you get your own chilis. Cheap to buy ready to go, or you could just plant some seeds and watch the mofo grow.

Harly needs any watering. The less water the hotter the chilis.

I would take a pic of mine (Cherry Bomb Chilis) but my phone got smashed.

Go to a nursury and ask.

mint - it's one of the toughest plants around. You can forget to water it for a week and it doesn't care, just keeps growing. Smells good when you touch it. Make tea from it. etc.

rosemary - also tough unless you over-water it

    aloe is cool

orchids have nice flowers, aren't planted in soil (less of a cleanup if knocked over) and only have to be watered once every couple of weeks. also, they prefer indirect sunlight so you can pretty much place them anywhere in the house
