    Default lying

What punishment do you think is fair in this case.

If its not clear in the article I might be able to clear it up a little bit. He took a handwritten test. You can contest your grade on any question after you get it back. He wanted to contest his grade on a question but spilled water on it. So, he made a photocopy of the questions themselves, blocking out his answers with white paper. Then, he copied his answer, and the TA's comments, to the new sheet, exactly as they were (aka not cheating). When he turned in this sheet to be reviewed, his teacher/ta smelled some bullshit, and when in her office she confronted him about it. He insisted that it was his original paper (aka lying). Two hours later, he sent her an e-mail, saying that he was sorry he had lied, he was just caught off guard by her accosting him, he understands he shouldn't have lied, and will accept whatever punishment she sees fit.

He was brought up on honor charges. During his honor trial, he was found not guilty of act or intent of cheating. However, he was found guilty of act and intent of lying. After being guilty of those two things, you are tried on seriousness, meaning is open tolerance of this act a violation of the community of trust. He was convicted, and we only have one punishment, meaning he's being booted barring a successful appeal.

If you're wondering why I care more than normal, he told us he was kicked out of school 5 hours before he was supposed to do a group presentation with me/group.

Also, schools like UVA and VT invest a lot into these honor codes and stuff. Trying to make it appear like it's an atmosphere and honest where there is trust between teacher and student and vice versa. When in reality, people do a lot worse than this a lot more frequently than this guy.

yea. i mean, i'm not exactly friends with him, but i've worked with him for a little while now. he seems like a nice guy, he does a lot of work, and he seems genuinely interested in what he's studying. I really hope he wins his appeal, but i don't think things are looking good.

i find this especially bullshitty give the last open honor trial. these two people were convicted of act and intent on cheating on writing a paper! and found not guilty on seriousness!!!! and this kid is kicked out for lying then repenting!!! WTF!

whoa ... thats really fucked up, he didnt even cheat. He was a dumb nerd that was quite obviously socially handicapped since birth, because any normal person would not take the "dont discuss regrades with me, send it in writing" waiver tha the teacher had to heart. This is a unique situation, and over powers the teachers silly rule.

it always cracks me up when people act like college kids never make mistakes. Maybe 5 years ago Columbus pretty much villified the OSU QB (Steve Bellesari) for getting a DUI the night before the game against.. Illinois I think - like have of us 'adults' didn't drive to the game plastered. If you didn't drive drunk many times in college, you didn't own a car.

yah.. I just had court today. Long story short I had an unopened beer in my pocket that I had forget that someone gave me earlier that night. I had nothing to drink that night. I got arrested for minor in poessession. I only have to pay 200$ total, which is not bad when it coulda been a lot more. But the point of all this is, the judge says "young man how old are you?" -- "20" -- now in a really beliddling(so?) voice he says something along the line sof "youve got a little bit longer to wait" and has this like look on his face as if I disgust him.

This made me want to choke the old fucker. Like are you seriously trying to act like you never had a drink before you were 21? When you were a kid it quite possibly was 18+ to drink were you lived, but because the laws were different did it make it less dispicable that you drank before the magical age of 21 (the age in which you all of the sudden become mature enough to handle alcohol..)? I really know very few people in this world that are over 18 and can honestly say they havent ever drank before.

What confuses me is what is supposed to change between 20 and 21 that makes drinking OK?

You'll understand when you are older, boy.
To win in poker you only need to be one step ahead of your opponents. Two steps may be detrimental.
