shotgun is and always has been easy to move the ball, but i've always been a firm believer in having some way to run the ball and control the clock when necessary. the 2 receiver, 2 back sets are the logical choice because most playbooks have a lot of them for variety and there are good passing concepts to go along with a solid running game and the personnel stacks up pretty well for most teams.
here's a situation:
Down 14-7, at opponent's 40 yard line with 3-4 minutes left in 2nd Q. We kick at halftime.
If we gun it out and score too quickly, it's very possible/likely that a good player is going to score again for the lead and get the ball back at half time.
If we pound it a bit and run some decent short route passing concepts it's easy enough to score a TD with a small amount of time left on the clock which is much better than the above scenario.
