Making a video podcast...

So I'm going be more involved with some of the marketing at my job and I was thinking about making a few video podcasts for new solutions we will be offering. Basically, I'd like to use a desktop recorder while I run through a few tools and dashboards and then record a voice over explaining capabilities etc. I'd also like the ability to insert slides or graphs to discuss the sales side.

I know there are tools like camtasia but I'd like to understand the whole process including things like video compression, editing, etc. Anyone have any experience with this?
