Default man i like really need help.

i have a habit of losing things. big things, small things, whatever.. if it's possible to lose I can lose it.

I've lost my wallet 3 times, my phone twice. Just today i went to the library computer labs and i had a USB mouse. I was doing something with my laptop, and was using my mouse and when i finished I noticed the lab comps had USB ports and i could use my nice mouse instead of their crappy shit. When i was done, i just picked up my laptop and left... and now I'm minus one mouse.

I'v left my car unlocked, sunroof open, multiple times... got lucky so far.

i've lost my school jacket when i was young. I lose my non-school jackets now i'm less young. I've lost a laptop once (and found it later).

I AM SO FUCKING RETARDED! Help me! what is wrong with me, and how do i god damn fix it?

P.S. I can memorize beethoven sonatas and long dance combinations, and half a law book... why am i so well whatever i am

    Ditto. I'm very similar

I imagine you're the same in that you're just absent minded. You're easily distracted so if something interesting happens, or people talk to you in that critical time when you're packing up or leaving, then your attention is shifted away from the task in hand and you usually fuck it up

I literally have to get my gf to shut up when i'm leaving the house so I can stand and figure out what i am supposed to take with me, and whether i have it.

I have a degree in astrophysics, so i'm not dense. I just lose focus!

The constant self-doubt and occasional spells of utter contempt for myself is an interesting side effect.

Some to alot of intelligent People loose focus on things that are not really really interested in.

They are so wrapped up on what they are doing (or going to do), they loose track on the "now".

If you have insurance or can afford in it, see a doc (medical or mental) or some other form of help. Research it online. Just don't assume you have this problem forever, find out about it, get help, you will thank yourself in the long run.

Don't say to yourself, "oh its not that big of a deal" -- figure it out, your smart, obess on fixing it for awhile

You are what I would call aloof. I am like that myself, but alot of it has to do with pot. Just try to focus on the task at hand and shut out external stimuli. I imagine you are not very good at multitasking, I'm certainly not. I just try to do one thing at a time and keep my mind occupied on the one task. Or start taking some meds if you feel that it's interfering with your life. I would advise against it tho.

Getting help doesn't mean always taking meds. You can learn habits that will help you modify your behavior. The habits will not change who you are, just will help you out in your forgetful moments. Try the self help section in the book store, Its a few rows down from the poker books.

Postit notes, reminders, etc are easy ways to help this problem. You have to voluntarily choose to fix this problem and stick to it. Everytime you go somewhere, have a checklist of what you're bringing, etc. Do the same for when you leave a place (ie don't forget mouse....check). It may sound stupid but it's just a conditioning thing and you soon won't need the list. You will internalize it. Give it a try.

P.S. If you're like me, you won't remember to do the postit thing after the first day, so leave a postit on your computer or bathroom mirror reminding you to do more postits

    Eh?

    Salsa:

I have not lost my wallet since I was a kid nor a jacket since I was a kid... but I'm rather paranoid about losing my wallet or phone so I just kind of ... elbow myself... where my cel phone usually is (left hip) and have the habit of tapping where my wallet is (right front pocket). Rather hard to explain, but it works for me.

It still sucks finding that the cel phone or wallet isn't there but I usually catch it early enough to go back and find it

yah man Im the same way... I dont typically lose stuff anymore, but I often am tapping my pockets to check if I have everything... I used to drop my cell phone in my car a lot because I wear khakis a lot, and the way they are cut change and my cell phone always fell out. I guess my car seat was slightly tilted back too. Anyways that was the death of my first cell phone.. It was a nice summer day when I was going in to work. When its hot out I leave my windows cracked so when I go for lunch I dont have to get into a 150° car. Anyways that sunny day turned into a cloudy, then rainy one. Lucky for me, my cell phone had dropped out of my pocket inbetween the door and the seat, I guess it got just wet enough and went bonkers. Another mental problem I have, I have to buy the best that there is. Like if I went to buy car, I cant settle for the base model, I would have to get the one with the bigger motor and all the bells and whistles. Sadly this was the same for my cell phone, I ended up spending $400 + tax

You are using aloofeness to describe forgetfulness as a personality trait. Forgetfulness is not the same as being "remote or distant (in terms of personality)", so it doesn't make sense in this context.

Aloof would be an antonym of attentive if if the context is with respect to social interaction.

But... hey, whatever floats yer boat.

    Cheers!

    hey thanks for reminding!

no, I'd read the replies and i thought i'd mull over it before posting something meaningful in reply. i still haven't come up with anything, so I'd just like to say THANKS for taking the time to give advice.

Epilogue: I went back to the library the next day cos i had a feeling it would still be there, and it was.

I've also started using postit notes.

    FTR is so cool
