For photo editing I think a better present would be a monitor calibration thingy. I haven't investigated this because I'm lazy (i.e. I don't print pictures that I've taken because I'm lazy, so I don't see the inefficiencies in my setup), but it seems ColorMunki and DataColor Spyder are two affordable options.
Outside of this, the monitor is non-critical for photo editing, as far as I'm aware.
