I only saw first three of episodes of Preacher but I need to finish it. It's hard b/c I can't find it streaming easily, and my schedule makes it hard to adhere to a network show. But I'm gonna plus one it being amazing anyway because the comic book is my favorite series of all time. I was super impressed by how the show adapted the tone and essence of the comics. To make an adaptation that is purely faithful to the pacing of the comics would be pretty much impossible, so it did require a lot of reimagining. I'm impressed with many of their choices. There've been a number of failed attempts before.
Also, the guy that plays Cassidy (my fav) is perfect. That alone makes the show a major success.
I really don't like what they did with Tulip's character though. Maybe my opinion will change when I finish the show. Something about it seems like it was trying so hard to be feminist friendly that it actually ended up being the opposite. I know everyone's championing what they did with her character b/c it's supposed to be so progressive but I don't think it is. From what I saw they zapped her of her vulnerability and humanity and made her into a weird 2-dimensional sociopath, and why.. To show that women can be totally badass too? The comic Tulip WAS super badass. Garth Ennis is such a good writer of complex characters. I dunno why they had to simplify what he did with her character. I also feel like they intentionally changed her style of dress to make her less "male gaze"... Because a woman who wants to look traditionally sexy obviously can't be self-assured and independent or anything. Anyway, maybe I'll redact all this when I finish the show. Hope so.
