Editing Pro-Tips:
No one understands your art. If you force them to notice that you want them to understand your art, they will resent it... even if they love you.
Don't try to "make people think", rather make something that "tricks people into realizing what they already know".
Subtlety is ALWAYS the best choice. When the audience realizes how clever you were after the fact, the memory will stay with them far longer.
Evidence of an editor is bad editing. A great soundtrack goes completely unnoticed. This is true for all editing.
Anything which does not support the presentation, distracts from it. A common rookie mistake is to use every possible editing feature on their first few projects. Remember that you're not trying to get them to notice that you're a great effects man, you're trying to present them something.
