    Default NFL Preseason Thread

I know there will be a regular season thread soon, but I thought I'd make this one to see how everyone's teams are doing, or how you think they'll do this season.

My Chiefs look freaking terrible right now. Matt Cassel went down with a leg (knee?) injury tonight and it could be bad. Not that his injury really hurts us or anything, as we have no O-line to speak of anyway so any QB you put back there is going to get killed. The defense has looked ok to this point, but it's going to be hard for the Chiefs to win games if they can't score. Basically, it's not looking good for the Chiefs right now.

My one gripe, and it's pretty huge, is that Kansas City put $28 million guaranteed towards Cassel. WTF has he done, besides leading the Patriots to an 11-5 record? The dude was throwing to Randy freaking Moss, Wes Welker, and had a badass supporting cast around him. He doesn't have that with the Chiefs, not by a long shot. Now we've sunk money into our savior that has maybe not proved a thing, with no O-line or any good receivers to throw to (Dwayne Bowe is good but drops a lot of passes and has work ethic issues)......damn.

It's going to be a long year, 0-16 here we come!

this just in, the top-5 QBs each year have a pretty good supporting cast

I use pre-season to watch all the Aggies that will find their ways onto practice squads when 53-man rosters are set. Texans O looks good this year, defense was shredded by Brees.NO and Favre comes to town Monday, going to be interested in how we handle AP. Off the wall prediction, Texans top-3 in points scored and yards gained this year.

Although that doesn't really matter, we're going to have to win 2-3 game we shouldn't in order to even contend for a Wild Card berth.

Ben Roethlsomething has had a bad offensive line in superbowl winning years.

And besides, your team is better than the Raiders.

QFT. The Steelers pass protection has been terrible for several years, but their run blocking is pretty solid. KC's line is atrocious in every aspect. I would've rather seen them lock up the best OL available in each of first 5 rounds... knowing they were going to drop all that coin on Cassel.

It looks easily as bad for the Rams (my team). Though the O-line should be somewhat improved at run blocking.. our QBs are going to get killed. I say QBs, because I only expect Bulger to play in about 8 games due to injury and such, so I'm sure we'll see plenty of Kyle Boller (barf)...

I'm hopeful that with Spags @ HC, the defense can take a step in the right direction. I loved Laurenitis (sp) in the 2nd round, and they've been doing some creative things with Chris Long. It certainly won't be an over-night thing, but hopefully in a couple years it'll we'll be able to compete for the division title. It's not like there is anyone that competent in the NFC West.

BTW, I like GB to win the North and go deep in the playoffs. I think Favre won't propel the Vikes much above 9-10 wins and I think the Pack could go 12-4.

I'd be willing to bet a lot that he holds the ball longer per pass play than any other QB in the league. Obviously determining this would not be easy but I cannot think of anyone else that fails to get rid of the ball like Ben.
  13. #13
he holds onto it hoping the other team will touch him, isn't his passer rating through the roof on plays in which the defense makes contact with him?

The Packers are just steamrolling right now! The first half of the Cardinals game was incredible. If they keep this up they will be unstoppable. The Defense reminds me of the 90's superbowl teams and the Offense is showing more talent than those teams.

Brady and the Pats look very good also; Randy Moss looked open every play; Deangelo Hall is the most overrated player in football.

How can you be overrated when you suck balls... that's like saying Brock Berlin is the most overrated QB in the NFL...

I agree, but the media continues to talk about him as if he is a shut down corner, and he signed ridiculous deals with both the Raiders and the Falcons in comparison to his production. All I ever see of him is the back of his jersey as he is chasing a WR for a touchdown.

I hated Deangelo Hall when he was in ATL and LTrain nailed the reason why. Looking forward to seeing how well the Dirty Birds do this year and hopefully Matty Ice will avoid a sophomore slump.

A note on Cassel's contract: At least for right now (i.e. before a new CBA is negotiated), contracts and specifically the amount of guaranteed money simply isn't comparable to what it used to be. Also, $28m guaranteed over a 6-year? contract isn't bad considering he had signed his franchise tender, which guaranteed him $14-15m on a ONE year deal.

Or consider that the Chiefs first round draft choice, Tyson Jackson, received $31 million guaranteed on a five year deal.

As far as offense goes (points, YPG), I undoubtedly put the Patriots and Saints at the top.

After that I have 3-4 teams in mind, Texans included.

This is somewhat surprising, i.e. the '08-09 Steelers had some pretty weak O-line play, at least in the context of winning a super bowl. The rushing game wasn't particularly effective and Roethlisberger got pressured, a lot. He really is an underrated QB though and with a better supporting cast, he'd be putting up elite stats like he did in 2007.

Of course on the Steelers it's all about the defense, which was best in the NFL last year by any objective measure.

And they had a lot of good fortune for their playoff run as well, from Brady's knee exploding in week 1, to the Colts having an off-year, the Titans being bounced early in the playoffs and the NFC sending an exceptionally weak team (again, relative) to the superbowl who almost pulled off the upset anyway.

I really hate to say this, but I think the Rams have the least going for them of any NFL franchise. Even the other bottom feeders like (in no particular order) the Lions, Browns, Bengals, Chiefs, Raiders, etc. have multiple things to be excited about. With the Rams, I don't know.. weak division, that's about it. Somewhat related, as a Browns fan I want to thank Mr. Matt Millen. Joe Thomas and Shaun Rogers should both be Lions and thanks to them having a buffoon of a GM, the Browns have some legitimate pieces to build a team around.

I said the same thing about the NFCN last year, that Green Bay was the team to beat and they imploded. I said that Minnesota MIGHT sneak in a division win or as a wildcard, but they'd be one and done in the playoffs due to their laughable passing game. I'm not sure what I think about that one just yet, but GB's first units have been REALLY impressive this preseason and Aaron Rodgers is the real deal and has a great supporting cast.
