I take no offense Lukie and I don't think you sound racist, prejudiced, etc. Affirmative action gets a lot of people worked up and you're taking a high road compared to many. The problems of black America (higher poverty, lower levels of education, higher crime and drug abuse rates) are complex in origin and even moreso in solution. Affirmative action is an extremely crude remedy, but I think it does much more harm than good (except for the fact that it got ratbastard Clarence Thomas onto the Supreme Court).

If you don't yet know whom you want to hire then yeah it's probably a good idea to interview a diverse group of people. The thing is occasionally a great coach becomes available and you know you really want him and there isn't any need to interview lots of candidates. For example when the Buccaneers fired Tony Dungy the Colts hired him just a couple of days later without seriously considering anyone else.

I dunno man, as a white man, I'm just not that worried about reverse discrimination. White people in the US have so many advantages to begin with. Of course there are lots of white people born into poverty in this country, but on average, if you're white you're born into a family that makes more money, has access to better education and better health care than if you're black, on average. Why is this? This is where so many white people get pissed off, but it really is slavery. "That happened 150 years ago, I've never owned slaves, my parents were poor immigrants, etc. etc." is what you hear all the time from people. But as recently as the 1960's blacks in many areas couldn't vote, couldn't go to the same schools, couldn't apply for many jobs, and lived under a different set of laws. As a result, they were poor and uneducated. None of us (except Warpe) remember the civil rights era, but it wasn't that long ago. And 50 years is an awfully short time for all this shit to correct itself. To this day, inner city schools are incredibly underfunded. An ex-gf of mine taught middle school in the Bronx and they didn't have money for textbooks, so she photocopied everything from the local library and paid for it herself!

I saw the same (or very similar) piece on ESPN about the A&M hire of Mike Sherman, and the sub-sequent protest of the Black Coaches Association. They THEN discussed Nebraska's possibility of hiring Turner Gill as the next head coach.

this is a great conversation. I had the EXACT same thoughts as Lukie when i saw this spot on SC. I think the underlying idea to get more black coaches into the network for possible future hirings is a good idea, but it IS at the expense of the school/pro team and hurts them the most. And i agree that its retarded to make the schools interview x number of coaches, no matter what their color/race/religion if they already know without a doubt who they want to hire.

right before halloween, my dog got into the candy (reeses peanut butter cups) and some cashews. a few days later i noticed a small pile of puke in the corner of my room. i look at it closely because it is very weird, not your normal puke. it was a slightly digested reeses wrapper, a beer cap, and some digested cashews. SWEET!

Just interviewing can be a big thing for someone who has not gone through the process before (it shows them how the process goes and allows them to be better prepared for their next one) and many minorities have never gone through the process before.

yeah, i just took a guess at that, but i doubt it would be much different. Owners/GMs are looking for the person they think will fit the best and get the most out of their team, not their skin color. While mandatory interviews may have opened someones eyes to another candidate they hadnt previously looked at, i doubt its changed the outcome of too many decisions.

Starting this past Saturday I had/have to read ~800 pages of material to make up for the 15 weeks of school that I did not read for this class. Test is on Tuesday. First year GPA determines what kind of job you get for the rest of your life. I am so fucked. |

so recently me and my brother have played 4-5 games of chess. we used to play very sparingly when we were younger. I'm up 2.5 - 1.5 in those games. I tell gabe that i've played a few games recently and he immediately challenges me to a game of yahoo chess ( i didn't even know that existed ).
