Default *** OFFICIAL Movies & Movie Recommendations Thread ***

So I noticed that FTR didn't have a thread to talk about movies and make movie recommendations to others. Of course, some movies and movie genres have their own thread, but why not make one official one?

I guess we should make some ground rules before getting started:

    1) The most important rule obviously: WARN US OF SPOILERS! Don't be a dick and ruin the movie for everybody. Recommend the movie, tell us what cool shit we can expect, and move on. If you want to talk about a specific part, warn us that spoilers are ahead!
    2) Something I like to do with movie threads is have a funny "alternate ending" part. Basically, you create a funny alternate ending for everyone who has already seen the movie to laugh at. However, again, WARN US OF ALTERNATE ENDINGS!

Anywho, to get things started, "Taken" with Liam Neeson was a SICK movie. If you like those "one-man army" kinda movies, this is one of 'em. 'Tis definitely worth a rent.

Another movie that I thought was underrated is Role Models. I don't get why this didn't get more love. Paul Rudd is genius and it was probably one of the best comedies I've seen in a long time.

OK...so probably a weak start to the thread, but whatever...I think movies deserve their own thread in general.
That's how winners play; we convince the other guy he's making all the right moves.

theres kinda one of these already... well I guess its more about movies that are currently in theaters or soon to be.. maybe the threads should be merged? Idk..

    Mulholland Drive.

This movie is so awesome, I watched it 4 times in one evening. Everytime you see it- its like a new movie.

    Fightclub! Love that flick!

All 4 Futurama movies. I feel like this show is under-appreciated around the FTR commune.

futurama is my favorite show ever, but I didn't think the movies were up to par. They're making a new season airing in 2010 though which I'm very excited about.

I just saw The Wicker Man (the original)

Really 60's, maybe drop some acid before watching or at least smoke a massive spliff. pretty weird film.

Plus Brit Eckland writhes around in the nude.

and the classic joke can be made throughout the film:

What do you call Edward Woodward with no D's?

    E-war-woo-war.

I just saw Halloween II and it was pretty damn good. A WHOLE lot better than the first remake.

Every other second was a nasty kill and the sound effects were pretty fucking awesome.

P.S. I'm one of those horror movie watchers that rate the movie on blood & gore.

Saw I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell a few days ago. Funniest comedy I've seen in years. Excellent script, great acting, and a story that doesn't insult its fucking audience.

OK...so I just watched "I Love You, Man." I thought it was pretty good. Paul Rudd & Jason Segel were great together. Rashinda Jones and Jaime Pressly were pretty damn hot and Jon Favreau (Queens' own) was pretty funny. Also, Lou Ferrigno was in it. How can it be bad with Lou Ferrigno in it?

I also watched "The Soloist," recently. THIS was a great movie. Jamie Foxx put in an amazing performance as did Robert Downey, Jr. I teared a little...

I shall recommend one, and only one movie

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0338309/

Also, physicists at Berkeley have recently created the first coolometer, and they use this movie as the gauge on this coolometer. If viewers love the movie then they score high on the coolometer, and if they don't love the movie they are pushed off a cliff

I cant wait to see it. I just wish the theatres here would show its original version.

I recommend eyes wide shut, U-Turn (prob the only watchable movie with Jennifer Lopez) and [urlhttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt0315733/]21 grams[/url]

Holy shit. So I just saw REC (the movie that Quarantine basically ripped-off) and it was nuts. REC >>>>>> Quarantine. I actually don't know how Quarantine fucked it up so badly. I was legit scared.

REC is in subtitles...so if you're one of those assholes that bitch about subtitles, don't watch this.

Paranormal Activity sucked balls. I'd like to request some creepy (legitimately scary) movies to watch with the girl. Wuf requested the Vanishing in the Paranormal Activity thread. In case anybody wants to watch another good scary movie, watch [REC].

In other news, I watched the Boondock Saints again today and I remember why I loved it so much. The Boondock Saints 2 trailer is out fwiw.

Don't make the mistake of thinking that The Vanishing is going to outright frighten you. It's a calm and collected film about a sociopath. It uses zero stagecraft to frighten. It is only disturbing inasmuch as the plot is based around the actions of a very real sociopath. It's the kind of film that could provoke it's viewers to think how easily their neighbor could be a sociopath, or how easily they could be targeted as a victim

It's just one of the worst movies I've ever seen and almost everyone who watches a decent number of quality movies shares that opinion, in my experience.

So that I'm not just trolling this thread, I'll list a few really good movies that most people probably haven't heard of.

Water - A movie about the practice of sending widows in India to temples where they live the rest of their lives in poverty. The husband of an eight-year child bride dies and she is taken to one of these institutions, where they raise money by pimping the younger widows to members of the highest caste.

Grave of the Fireflies - A Japanese anime that takes place during WW2. A teenage boy and his preschool aged sister are orphaned and they struggle to survive against the backdrop of Japan losing the war.

Cinema Paradiso - Probably my favorite movie, though I have a hard time explaining why. A movie director returns to the small town he grew up in, for the first time in 30 years. Most of the movie is flashbacks to his childhood involving his mentor, the projectionist at the local movie theater. The theme is about leaving your childhood behind in order to pursue your dreams, and then the nostalgia you feel for it after it's gone forever.
  54. #54
I also agree pretty strongly with something wufwugy posted in another thread which is that the majority of really good movies are tragic ones. I guess it's because with a story about people who have happy lives it's hard to convey a very powerful message.

It doesn't take itself seriously and therefore can't be the worst movie ever. Plus it features some of the most obnoxious overacting since Gary Oldman in Leon, which should be worth something.
    <3 <3 <3 Willem Dafoe

But I agree that this is not what I'm looking for in a movie recommendations thread... be a little more creative people... Nobodies gonna go "OMG Fightclub, I can't believe I've never heard of that! Awesome movie"
Everyone in the western hemisphere has seen it.

I've posted all my favorite obscure movies a couple of months back, so I'm not gonna repeat, but I'll try to think of new ones...

Werner Herzog has released 2 movies recently. idk if they're in theaters yet. I haven't seen either of them.
Bad Lieutnant looks like another attempt at being more hollywood which previously failed pretty badly for Herzog with Rescue Dawn.
My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done - doesn't look like he's being in his element either, and the expectations will be stupidly high... David Lynch associated with the Production company, Herzog Directing and OMGWillemDafoe.
    Should be worth watching.
But it's Herzog, so don't complain if you're looking at an uncut scene of a dancing chicken accompanied by harmonica for 10 minutes at some point during the movie... it happens.

District 9 - produced by Peter Jackson... which I'm just gonna take as a good thing. In my mind Lord of the Rings never happened. I'm just hoping this is the same guy producing who did Bad Taste, Braindead and Heavenly Creatures.
Sam Raimi just recently escaped the claws of satan and made a good movie again... I'm just hoping Jackson will follow his footsteps.

I think I have pretty good taste in movies, but at the same time Im highly tolerant of entertaining crappy movies. I really enjoyed the wolverine movie. I know theres nothing of value in the movie, yet for what it was it was well presented and definitely first level entertaining. That being said, wanted was probably the worst movie Ive seen since get rich or die tryin. Actually, no, I lied. I saw a movie fairly recently staring morgan freedman and antonio banderas. That was worse than both get rich or die trying and wanted put together.

Can someone explain to me why morgan freedman does so many shitty movies? Does he have some insatiable heroin habit? Does he just enjoy money bon-fires? I wish he would just stick to narrating and roles in the league of shaw-shank.

I have District 9, GIJoe, Mall Cop and Milk all downloaded ready to go, these are the ones I have seen this last two weeks

    Benjamin Buttons was OK

    Gran Torino was really good

    Food Inc is fucked up

    Memento was good

Sin City kinda sucked, but It had it's moments

The usual suspects was supposed to be good but I don't know if it was because I was tired or just figured it out quickly that I was kinda meh about the movie

Glad you watched it and liked it. They do drop that bomb on you at the halfway point. I really loved the style of direction (called dogme). It gave it the genuine home video feel that fit so perfectly into the scenario. I'm a fan of authenticity and emotions. One of my other favorite movies is Before Sunrise, but that's the exact opposite of fucked up. The emotions that movie triggered for me were so powerful and frustrating that I still haven't watched the sequel, Before Sunset.

Two of the other must watch foreign films I've seen (and among my favorites) are Seppuku and Evil. You gotta watch those. Seppuku will forever be the best Samurai film made, and the story is one of a kind. Don't let the title of Evil fool you, it's a horrible title/translation. It's a superb film about a super cool kid whom life tries to screw, but because he's so fucking cool he doesn't let it

Seven Samurai was pretty great. It was, after all, Kurosawa and starred Mifune, who are both Japanese film legends. But you gotta watch Seppuku. AFAIK, Tatsuya Nakadai was overshadowed by Toshiro Mifune (Mifune often bested Nakadai in their film roles), but Nakadai put on an even more amazing performance than Mifune ever did in Seppuku, and this is coming from a Mifune nuthugger.

Of course, if you want good action Samurai (Seppuku is more of a drama than an action), you can't get any better than the Miyamoto Musashi trilogy. Mifune was such a fucking badass. Samurai films were seriously among the best ever. American Westerns are almost entirely pulled from Japanese Samurai. If it wasn't for Mifune, Clint Eastwood would probably never have become the film badass he is

Need some DVD type movies from the last year or two to catch up on. Pretty much missed them all except the few blockbusters.

I liked the movie, but it bugged me that they left out a huge part of what happened in the book.

For sure. That's to be expected

I loved the movie, though. I also have stopped reading fiction novels partly due to wanting my film experience to be tops. Novels are always better than the film
