I think the walking dead is what happens when you take a well-read film student with no natural writing talent and give him carte blanche.

They keep trying these avant garde ideas but they aren't remotely qualified to execute them properly. A great series might be able to make the Governor a sympathetic character with a redemption arc, TWD cannot.
