Define well informed. This is the age of information and people know exponentially more now then decades ago and this trend will continue. Perfect information (which is what I think yoy mean by wellinformed) as a requirement for a free market to work is based on pure economic theory and not a practical/useful assumption to real economic applications.
With perfect information, government subsidies for research would not exist, do you see why?
Oh, and as for the stupid people, Darwin has some sort of theory you might not agree with.
