I agree about the change in personnel being negative, and there being a classier era. And there is plenty of good things to say about Reggie Miller, but you can't call a flopper "classy."

Baseball predated the "hype" and "viewers" that I think you are referring to.
Baseball has a charm (you won't hear that word used with any other sport) that is not worth arguing about. You can't tell a child that beer tastes good. Cigars are not an obvious attraction to many people. Older women usually only look good to older men. There's no use in selling baseball's charm. You either get it, or you don't, but, given enough time, you can't imagine not liking it.
