Well,
It sounds like you want to play a multiplayer game that is also an rpg. Of course, right now the best in the market is WoW. Almost all fantasy MMORPGs or going to be the same. Levelling, running quests, interacting with the world, pvp, etc. If you actually have a group of 3-5, WoW could be fun assuming you all play on a schedule and no one bolts ahead of the group. The storyline is quite linear (particularly for alliance) for the first 30 levels or so, and a group that size, assuming good class picks, would be fun.
I loved the Baldur's Gate series, but I haven't heard anything good about multiplayer Neverwinter Nights. I imagine it would be alot like online Baldur's Gate, so probably not much repeatability.
Conan is coming out, as is Warhammer online, but again, I think these will be the same genre as WoW. The is also Middle Earth online, but again, I think it is just a variation on WoW.
The only other recommendation I would have is Eve online. It is a spaceship game that has a cult following. You can actually download a free 14 version and try it out. You level skills over time (including logout time), so time spent levelling is not really the issue. I hear it is very pvp oriented at the higher levels, and almost like a RTS in terms of building bases, economies, etc.
