ripping DVD's to AVI or similar

I cant seem to find a good answer for this on my googler. I want to rip my Wire DVD's down to a format that i can watch on my Nexus 7 while i'm traveling. I've torrented things in the past and have most things seem to be in .avi. Is there an easy way to do this?

I downloaded some shitty program that ripped one of the my Sopranos season 6 dvd's, but it turned it into a bunch of random segments of the shows in no logical order.

Can't you just download a new set in whatever format you want (assuming you can find any given format)?

I've never used it on Windows and haven't used it at all in like 4 years, but this used to be the way to go.

do you mean torrenting? i'd rather not do to increased monitoring in the recent past by many isp's including my own.

I used handbrake in the past but because I torrent so much most of my stuff plays automatically on my Note2 if it's avi or mp4 nowadays

Like Mark haven't bothered to do it for 8 years,
but even in those days it was pretty easy to find some good easy to use free products.
You already know the key term 'ripping'
googling 'dvdripper' comes up with a bunch of options.

My favourite from the old days was DVD Shrink (http://www.dvdshrink.org/)
because file size was important in those days.

But if you RIP a full DVD to a single AVI you will obviously lose the menus.
probably better to try and rip each episode individually.

From the modern tools WinX DVD Ripper and DVDFab HD Decrypter look to be the most popular for ripping entire dvds to harddisk.

yeah, i want to rip individual episodes to some mainstream file format. i just said avi as an example because thats always what torrented shows come in ime.

Just download and install MX Player on your nexus. Then you can just copy and paste the dvd's audio_ts and video_ts folders into a folder on your nexus, and play the dvd directly without having to convert to avi (loosing quality in the process).

edit: if there is not enough space in your nexus to do that, you can play the movie directly from a usb stick plugged in your Nexus via a USB-on-the-go cable, but I think you may have to be rooted to do that.

hmm, didn't know you could do that. I alreay use MX player, so i'll try it out. i dont have much media on there, so storage isn't really an issue.

Did it work?
A lot of DVDs wouldn't play that way because the video_ts vobs were encrypted with macrovision to only be playable from the original DVD (unless ripped instead of copied).

yeah it probably wouldn't work with original DVD's. In that case, rip first, then copy. Note that you also have to rip first if you want to make an avi from a protected DVD.
